Wet sanding white choc tricoat metallic?

Just a question about wet sanding the white choc tricoat metallic paint. I have a couple of minor paint chips and I am just wondering after filling the chips if it is wise to wet sand them (2000 grit) to smooth things out. I am aware that the metallic is in the clearcoat and I have both the base and clearcoat for the repairs but will the clear coat dull and be able to be brought back to life with a polish or wax. Thank you!

I shy away from touching up paint. But, have you consider bringing your truck, with touch up paint in hand, to a well known body shop and letting them do the work? They have the tools, supplies and staff to do it right.

Good question about the metallic being in the clear coat. I did wet sand a spot on the hood of my 535i...someone (using a knife or something) gouged my paint in the middle of the hood while I was in the market. I thought, what the heck, I'll see what I can do 1st, since the hood is going to have to be repainted anyway. I applied touch up paint in several layers then wet sanded using a block and 2000 sandpaper and it came out pretty nice. You don't even notice it unless you are really trying to find something. Was a 2" by 1/4" jagged scape down to the alumin hood. After sanding, I used my buffer and it brought the shine back very nicely. Good luck, go slow and don't get carried away with the buffer....slow is your friend....

It is all going to depend on how comfortable you feel with doing this. I just purchased an 09 Black Platinum and while it was at the dealer getting prepped, someone dropped something right near the door handle and put about a 3" deep scratch in the paint. Well I noticed it when I went to pick it up and they said "we'll take care of that, it'll just wax out." Well when it comes back it looks even worse bacause they used compound on the scratch, dulled the paint in a "spot", and scratched it even worse.

I have been detailing for almost 15 years privately, so I just used 2000 grit sandpaper and wetsanded it out myself to fix it. The key is to keep it extremely wet. I mean I used about a third of a bottle of detailer on the scratch for only about 30 seconds of sanding in this tiny area. I then used a process of three stepdown compunds to buff the area out and it now looks brand new again and you can't even remotely tell where the scratch had been. I really surprised myself at how good it looked on black, even with knowing what I was doing.
