Surround Sound/DSP

Alright, how can I try out the Surround Sound? Does the Sony read DVD-Audio? DTS? Also, when I go through the "Sound" menu, it lists "DSP Mode" and I can't change it from "Stereo." How can I access surround sound? Also, does anyone have any suggestions for good surround sound discs? I am looking for the old Metallica black Album in DVD-Audio, but man it's expensive since they discontinued it. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

It does support dvd-a but i sold my last dvd-a disc months ago so couldnt test it. I am about to try a test disc for surround sound to see if the system is true 5.1 as i heard that only the lincoln mks gets that feature. I shouldnt see why not though as the platinums have a center speaker. Not sure about other models.

My FX4 has the center speaker too, but makes no mention of what types of discs to use... I think all of the Sony systems have the DSP option in the sound menu, has any one figured it out?

I am going to run to Fry's this afternoon and see if I can't find some old DVD-Audio discs. Unfortunately I think they have been discontinued for the most part. Best Buy told me yesterday that they don't stock them any more, but that they "should have some left overs mixed in."

I will post up if I find something.

FYI, those are DVDs, unfortunately I don't have the Nav system, so I am looking for 5.1 DVD-Audio discs, like the ones listed in Amazon but no longer in stock. Unless the non-Nav Sony will play normal DVDs and just pipe through the audio? Anyone tried this?

I went to Fry's, bought a DVD-A disc popped it in, and "Bad Disc" shows up. I suppose this means that the Sony without Nav will not read DVD-A discs. Luckily, Fry's let me return the DVD-A! So I bought some regular CDs. Any one have any other ideas? I would like to try an SACD and possibly DTS, but I don't really want to go risk another 30 bucks.

Well i tried a few SACD's and they would only play the normal cd audio and not the super audio. But i sort of guessed that would be the case. I did try some DTS and DD test cd's and they all seems to be giving me full 5.1 surround but im not 100% sure as i cant find my test tones for 5.1 surround. I will download and try again later. But boy it sounded good on DTS on the starwars pod race scene.

Also HD-DVD's dont work nor do blu-rays as again i guessed they wouldnt but you never know.

Thanks Barritia, I wonder if it only works with the nav system... I wish I owned a DTS or Dolby Digital disc to try out. Anyone without a Nav but with Sony system have a disc to try?

Side note, unrelated, I am seeing more and more 09s here in the Austin area, saw 12 driving around today!
