USB 2 working great. (pics inside)

Ok! well i got the cables i ordered and installed them into the truck and the second usb port works as expected. I did have problem with the system not accepting 3 different cables for some strange reason. The one that did work was the Sony PS3 controller charger cable!!!

A few things you will need, prob about $10-15 max

Below i will give a rough idea of cable's that are need. The reason i say rough is because it can be done a few ways. I will list the way i did it and some others.

Male mini usb - standard male usb cable
usb extension cable
female -female usb connector (this connector will make the convert extension cable take any standard male usb cable like a hard drive or mp3 player)

Basically you want to start with a male mini usb cable and build it up with different cable's to achieve the connection you would like at the other end because i couldnt find a male mini usb - female usb all in one cable.

This company seemed like it stocked a lot of the connectors needed. Not sure if im allowed to post this but it's a handy site.

I removed the center speaker surround so that i could get to the system.

The socket next to the black cable is the second usb port and i run a Male mini usb cable to center console. (See 3rd pic)

I made the cable in 2 parts so that when i get the sync plate i can mount that inside the cubby hole without pulling the cable back through.

Cable coming through back on console for hardrive for now.

Hardrive connected.

Hardrive working on USB2.

Nice job, bud!! Thanks for the pics and the confirmation. Any advice as to the console disassembly? I haven't looked into it and i'm sure it's simple, but any pitfalls or things to watch out for? Also, is it pretty easy to fish the cable down behind/through the dash, or did you have to take the dash trim off? Thanks again!

The center console just lifts up and pops out if you lift from just behind the cupholders and it will hinge up towards the dash and then slip over the gear shifter. Come's out very easy. Same goes for the rear of the console where the cup holders are. lift up the rear of the console in back of truck and it will just pop up but you will have to unscrew the lid for the center comnsole to get to the 2 bolts you will see when you lift the rear cup holders up. Give me a shout if ya have a problems and i will take a pics of it.

Barritia,

Nice job, I'm going to want to come back to this mod once my truck arrives. Was that flashlight holder there or did you install it and is it in the glove box?

thx

Nevermind - I can now see it's in the console bin...did you attach the mounts?

Yep i just ordered the maglight mounts from amazon and just used self taping screws. So much room in there that you can fill it with so many gadgets lol.
Keep the screws short if you put them there as there's air vents behind where i mounted it. Wont matter to much if you screw into the vents though to be honest.

Anyone know if this only works with the Nav system? Does the Sony non-nav have a second USB?

Thanks for posting pics!

I would like to know the answer to this as well as I will be in this situation. But, I don't have my truck yet so I can't really help-out.

Johny you got access to the truck now? Use the sync button and say usb2 and see if it what it does. If it does have the second usb it will say usb2 not found.

that hard drive looks like it was made to fit in that console. You might see if you could bring the cable straight back off of the hard drive for a cleaner look, like move it over 2" to the left on the console.

I did think about drilling a hole through the tray so that it was a bit neater but it started to rain hard so finished it up and put it back together. Prob do that in the morning. The handy thing is there's a perfect hole to get a normal sized usb cable through on the back of the console.

Just had an idea that i could velcro it to the bottom of the tray also. That way it would even be seen.
