I had a bug defector on my 99 F-150. It didn't work and looked tacky. I prefer the clean lines of the truck itself now.

No They don't look great on the vehicle, but they work. I could care less about the bugs,it is the stone chips that they prevent that I care about. The 2009 f150 are going to be a magnet for stone chips on the leading edge of the hood, on either side of the Grille. The clear 3m bra is the way to go,but depending where you live it is not easy to get one applied by someone who knows what they are doing.

I've yet to see a deflector for the 2009 that looks decent. They all take away from the great look of the front end. In years past they added to the look because the hood lines flowed the right way allowing them to look like a nice addition. But the '09 hoods/grille's are such that anything on them just takes away from the sweet look of them and the deflectors look goofy trying to wrap around up/down and above the headlights. Also seen some that just go above grille, not headlights. Those look goofy cause they're too short and again don't flow well with the hood/grille of the '09.

If anything go with the 3M stuff, although honestly how many years does someone keep their truck to go crazy over protecting it by possibly ruining the look. Most people keep their trucks an average of 5 years, so I can't imagine it's going to be a big deal. There are a bunch of people on here who have had their '09's a while now, and I haven't heard any of them complain yet of any excessive chipping compared to the previous models. Perhaps they'll chime in here and let us know. What ever happened to that very first guy with an '09, he'd know if anyone would...

PS Couldn't you just get a big sheet of that 3M stuff, cut it yourself and apply? Not that I will put it on my truck, but doesn't seem like it's rocket science. I did my own reflective striping on all my previous F-150's myself, and it always came out perfectly, everyone always thought I had someone do it but nope, just little me!

I went with the 3M stuff on my 2003 that I greatly prefer over the bug/rock deflectors. Might as well just get a pre-cut kit from Ebay and install it yourself. Cutting a 5' wide line/curve by hand is not easy and I'm not sure how much you'd save. I found one for $90 from a quick Ebay search.

Found the thread. This is the first guy on here to have an '09, so he'd most likely know best if chipping has been a problem more so than normal wear 'n tear.

+ 1000 - IMO, for the little protection it offers -it's not worth the detraction in looks from the truck

The looks of that tacky add-on is exactly why Clear-Bra and comparable products are offered. It's much more effective and doesn't make your truck look goofy. No offense, of course.

I have never been a fan of the bug deflectors. The clear bra might be worth getting though. I'd drive 30 minutes to an hour to find a reputable clear bra installer, way before I'd drive 30 minutes with an ugly bug deflector on my truck.

i'm not digging the 3m stuff and the main reason i want to bug deflector is for the outside edges of the hood..it'll be a magnet for rocks

I've got a dealer installed deflector on the XLT I just bought. I wasn't big on it having the deflector but it was already installed and was the only truck in the Florida with exactly everything else I wanted. The truck was transferred from another dealer and I ended up actually liking the deflector once I saw the truck. The deflector appears to be an actual Ford accessory and looks different than what is pictured in the PDF posted by the OP. However it does not extend out to cover the front edges of the fenders, just the hood.

I'll try and post a pic when I get the chance.

Cell phone pic so not so great but maybe gives the idea of what mine looks like...

I like it except could do without the "F-150" on it.

They do more harm than good. All of the paint will be rubbed off where it is installed. They look silly too. . . . makes the truck look like it is owned by an old man. You're going to have to wipe the bugs off of your bug deflector anyway. Or, are you going to get a bug deflector for your bug deflector?
