Remote Start
Remote Start
Just got my new 2009, made the mistake of ordering it with remote start. It can only run 10 minutes!!! What good is that!! Guess I will take it out and install an aftermarket one. Have to use a separate key FOB as well.
What mdoel you got again Cpfixer?
It can be changed to 15 minutes. The Factory remote starts only run for 10 or 15. See if your dealer can change it for you. I will look in my remote start manual and see if there is a setting to change it.
15 Min
Even at 15 min. I put a Crimestopper in my 2007 F250SD and I can adjust it from 12 min to infinity. If my truck sat out overnight at 20 degrees how warm will it be in 15 minutes?
I'm sitting at -8 degrees right now and my truck was warmed up in 15 minutes this morning... What's more important is that you take it very easy for the first few miles when driving in the cold.

Unless your looking for an alarm I see nothing wrong with the Ford Remote Start Only modules. Am I missing something or is there something I should know about it?

Just my opinion, but I think letting it idle away for 10 or 15 minutes just to let it warm up is pretty much a waste of expensive gas and just not necessary. It will warm up MUCH quicker if you just get in and start driving it, especially at 20 degrees which isn't even that cold for a vehicle. This approach will also ensure that EVERYTHING gets "warmed up" (tires, suspension, tranny, etc.) and not just the engine. Like rch0007 said, the key is just taking things slowly until everything gets warmed up.
I follow this approach unless it's like -30C or colder and even then, I'll usually only let it run for a minute or so before driving away. Of course, my vehicles also generally get plugged in whenever it's -20 or colder so that helps as well.
Now of course, if you are simply wanting a warm cabin to get into, then disregard everything I've just written and let it idle away, LOL

I am now starting to think remote start will be a waste of time for me. If i leave it to sit to warm up the cabin it takes 5-10 mins for the engine to get hot enougth to get some warm air in the cabin or if i get in and drive it to the botom of our road (2mins max) it's already starting to blow warm air. Also the seats warm up super fast and they are hot in no time.
^remote start is best used for clearing frost (and snow/ice) off the front windshield in the mornings before you leave. If your windshield is covered with thick frost or ice, it's not like you jump right in and start driving because you won't be able to see crap. So use the remote start to get a head start on clearing that stuff off. Otherwise, if nothing is on the windshield, you don't really need it because the truck gets warmer faster when you start driving it.
Also, you could use it in the summer too with the A/C. Even though it can get hot sometimes here, I've never used the remote start to cool the truck.
For the past few years now, my truck is parked in a garage overnight. So I only use the remote start when leaving work in the evenings during winter. If a buy a new truck, I'll probably still install the remote start too just to use it after work like I said.
To the original poster, if you would have paid closer attention to the factory order details, the remote start that they add is only the basic one-button keyfob unit (so you'll have 2 keyfobs). You can change the run time to 15 minutes, I think that's plenty of run time.

Yes the Crime Stopper was a very good system. I understand what you all say about the starting slowly and all, I just want the truck to be warm and defrosted. Which is another point, the heated mirrors and rear defroster cannot be left on with the remote start. Another reason to put in my own. I just checked the website again and it does not say 1 button remote start anywhere. Does anyone know how to extend the time to 15 minutes? That should carry me until I can install my own. To answer, yes I could remote start again but I am usually doing something else once I start it!!
