Ok I'm confused? Help pls.

Ok on some other forum guy posted this:

http://media.ford.com/products/press...398&make_id=92

He was getting at the fact the 5.4L has two tier power figures pending e85. I know this was a rumor back in spring, but I thought this debate was dead back when the #s finally emerged back earlier in Sept. What am I missing? Do we have contradicting facts from Ford elsewhere?

I think I'd believe it. E85 is effectively over 100 octane and will run with a lot more timing advance, thereby boosting the power.

This is so copyright a forum back in summer, but here we go again: So the timing would be variably adjustable based on actual % of ethanol in the tank? The ethanol rate of e85 is variable in real world driving itself, never mind is you are switching back and forth.... Is the 320/390 only happen if its actually 85% Ethanol, what if you run 70% is it somewhere in between or black and white? I just don't buy it.

The timing adjusts itself with input from the knock sensor. It advances till it pings, then backs off. Pure ethanol is around 104 octane, pure gas is anywhere from 85 to 94 octane, depending where you buy it and what grade you buy. I'm assuming the gas numbers are based on 87 octane at sea level on a "standard day" (specific temperature and humidity). The E85 numbers are probably based on 85% ethanol mixed with 15% 87 octane gas. Yes, the numbers will probably be somewhere in between if you use a different amount of ethanol blend.

With all that said, those numbers are primarily for advertising purposes. Your engine on a dyno probably won't give you those exact numbers on anything. They could be higher or lower, they just have to advertise for either an average - or *maybe* best case, I don't know what the rules are.

Hmmm so this is the only motor currently available with this feature?

The big picture is if this is true (and it looks like it is) is how pathetic the current engine lineup is. @ 320/390 I was flirting with idea of an 09, but @ 310/ tq unchanged.... Sorry no thanks. I'll keep my 04. @ more gears ain't enought to make me open the wallet.

Found this:

"The 5.4-liter, 3-valve Triton V-8 has been optimized for better performance and delivers 320 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque running on E85 (85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline), pure gasoline or any blend in between; 4X2 trucks equipped with the 5.4-liter V-8 are EPA estimated to achieve 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway – a 12 percent improvement versus the previous model. Fuel economy when operating on E85 will yield different values than gasoline."

Must have been updated? Confusing.

Ok page 4 of brochure it says:

A MORE POWERFUL 5.4L V8 with new 6-speed automatic gets a
horsepower boost up to 320, and twists out 390 lb.-ft. of torque.3
Year over year, this new arrangement increases maximum towing
capability up to 1,800 lbs. This Flex Fuel (FFV) capable engine
runs on E85 (85% ethanol/15% gasoline), straight gas or any
blend in between

3 320 hp and 390 lb.-ft. torque ratings require E85 fuel.

Well Ethanol has only 67% the "burn power" of gas, so makes sense to me.
