power opening tailgate write up

ok well here is the write up onhow to make your tailgate do this

VIDEO

obviously you will need an ez down otherwise the tailgate would drop way too fast

also the power lock write up can be found on myst's website found here
MYST'S WEBSITE

ok well here is how it will all look

first you need to drill 2 holes in the stock latch assembly and bolt the long strip of metal that comes with the power lock(or something similar) like shown here, this is needed for leverage as the solenoid isnt strong enough to pull farther down on the latch, btw dont ground to the handle bolts, yes i know its easy but doenst ground well as the ground relys on the hinge which isnt good, ground it on the frame or bed, or ground your tailgate

next you need to mount the solenoid, it took me a couple tries to figure out the best place for it and here is where i came up with, notice i had to pull the slack out of the latch being that the solenoid only has about a half inch of travel

you will need to clearance the mount so that the rod can still function properly(but if the stylesides allow the solenoid to go farther down the tailgate then you wouldnt need to do this)

I know this old, but , as everybody says.."search". so I did.

I am super interested in doing this mod. But- he linked some instructions here to "Myst's website"- which is a dead link.

So installing a popper un-locker is no biggie and there are plenty of instructions around the web- but the part I am interested in is THE DOOR POPPPER. The function that makes the tailgate drop, not just unlock.

Opening the lock is one thing....lowering the gate, with assist of course, is another.

The piece of the puzzle missing for me is how to "pop' the tailgate to start the lowering motion.

I assume it is similar to regular door poppers on shaved door mods , but, I 'm sitting here thinking, how would that be wired? I have no experience with these.

I guess I'll figure out the wiring...but , if anyone knows how to put a door popper- not just a lock opener in place- That would be much appreciated.

Maybe someone visited the original instruction link before it died?

Appreciate ant leads on this, I'll post up the how to when it all gets figured out.

I don't know how to do it, but I know someone does. I've seen an 06 with this full setup and with it wired to the guy's aftermarket alarm. Pretty neat watching it drop

I'm not sure what it is that you don't understand. The entire post was about how to make the popper work. The link to Myst's site was for the lock.

The part I was missing in all of this is what makes the tailgate initiate the move to the open position. I can understand the solenoid imitating pulling up on the handle.
Then I searched the interweb and found these things

They are adjustable and flush mount and provide the pressure to push the tailgate away from the bed.

That's what I'm hoping. I've been studying a lot of hot rodder type forums where they install these door poppers and they usually install a door popper to push the push the door into motion. I'll go with it an see what happens.

Also looking for a linear actuator possibility to raise and lower the bed instead of just popping it.

Well as you can see, I have done this. No popper needed.

Yes, I see it's successful and a very good post.
How is the timing of the open function hooked up?
Currently, 1 Click on the remote unlocks my drivers door.
2 clicks opens all doors.

Would I hook up the 1 click locking function on the tailgate and the doors, and then use the 2 click function to pop the tailgate?

Or how would that work? Maybe a separate remote for the tailgate?

p.s. I don't have an after market alarm or a remote with a trunk button

OK, I think I got a lead on how to do this.
It involves the BCM Body Control Module.
I got schematic of how that unit works to control the door lock and unlock functions through the remote. It involves 3 relays.
It won't be easy- I'm a mere novice- but I believe I'm on to something that could work involving the addition of a relay.
I'll have to do a lot of tinkering though.

The goal is to use the existing key remote I have now. And to create a lock /unlock pattern so the tailgate lowering function happens outside the normal door lock/unlock process.

Nothing is ever simple, is it.?
