I made a little circuit that detected 4 pulses on the driver door unlock signal to unlock my tonneau cover (sorry, no schematics for liability reasons.) It's worked well for me and is outside normal operation pattern.

Now that's what I'm talking about. I was thinking of trying to figure out the "panic" button function route and re-route that to the actuator for popping the tailgate.

What I waive liability? Will you share your method?

It's not you, it's the people suing you (and me) after something unexpected happens. Attorneys have made this [unfortunately very] clear to me.

But... counting pulses. That's an idea you can start from, and from there it's not too hard to come up with something on you own.

Thanks for chiming in Myst.

TP, I had an aftermarket alarm that I used the trunk button. I have heard of people using factory ford car remotes with a trunk button. Not sure how they did it but maybe something to look into.

It's tough finding info on the relays within the BSM(OR BCM) I thought about the trunk button too, but, how to program it and does the BSM have a means of recieving the signal from it. I think the idea of combination of buttons sounds reasonable. I was almost thinking of making the never used "Panic" button- but from the schematic I can't tell which wires go to the horn.

I am trying to read a bunch of stuff about relays and see if it something doesn't pop out at me at how work something out that way.Probably going to be a lot of trial and error.

Interesting. I have seen the tailgate power lock but nothing to pop the latch.

Been reading up on some remote start systems that say that through the use of some additional relays you can run the remote start right off the factory fob and even add a function or two, like remote window up/down.

I'm still reading basic electronic manuals about relays, types of relays and how they work. Then I'll probably give one of the mfg.'s a call and see ho this set up works.

Module

Another forum had a guy who used a PAC (I think was brand) TR - 7 module. It watches the unlock wire for a determined number of pulses, then sends a signal to a relay (since its a small signal) that sends power to the popper. Of course I've lost the link now.

It looks like the PAC TR-7 is a multi use product, and I haven't looked at it too much to figure it out. He kept the factory remote, push unlock three or four times, tail gate drops. Only push it once or twice - normal door unlock operation. At least thats what I got out of reading his post. I believe it was on the 2009+ F150forums.com. If you look at it and understand it more than me please share with the class. The module is <$20 on ebay...

Thanks, good info. I'll look into the Pac 7.
Unfortunately- got some front end body work to do now. A little mishap.

But I'm still wanting this project to work with the factory remote pretty bad.

I know how old this thread is but did you (or anyone) find a kit to do the pulse-counting to keep use of the stock remote?
I understand Myth's idea, just don't know how to implement it.

The pac 7 will do that.

I think you are absolutely right, and a heck of a lot easier than what I did. You are looking at application 14 on this page to get it working.

Would have saved me days if I knew about this (if it existed 10 years ago. ).

it's a great little device. It might have been around back then, my 05 I had one for the parking brake bypass on my alpine headunit, had to have been at the latest 06 when I put that in.

I have one sitting in my garage waiting to be used to delay the HID lights on my motorcycle.
