Ruined mine by being finickey and playing with the needles. The actual gear for the rpm needle came apart on the inside. I took everything apart but it no longer works. Not sure how I managed to do this.
Anyway, does anyone know which clusters will and will not work? I found one from an fx4, I didn't really want that style, but the mileage is almost exact.
Would that work? And will I have any theft lights or anything other symptoms? Or is it plug n play?
I just swapped from FX4 to Lariat with no issues. But with lower packages there seems to be some, such as TPMS light on and dome lights not working. The above thread covers that...
I read something before about the higher end ones not working with the lower end models. I just orderd an xlt cluster (which is the same as my xl cluster since I have a manual). I'm hoping its plug n play.
This one is for an auto, I'm guessing that part with the PRND21 can just be removed and I can put in the black plastic piece from mine? It just seems to clip in there.
The one I ordered is also only 50 miles shy of my current odomiter.
Ps that's the exact thread I found and read on google prior to posting too. Good info in there.
I recently replaced my 2006 STX cluster with one out of an same model year XLT and everything seems to work fine. Mine is an automatic so it may work a little different. I made the swap because my original cluster did not have a tach.
The only thing not working is the compass and ambient temp reading. The XLT cluster has that function above the odometer reading and my STX does not have those systems so it just displays dashes.
Does anyone know if a temp sensor and compass can be plugged into the STX existing wiring harness to get that functionality?
Or can the odometer screen be programmed not to display the temp and compass reading? And instead show the odometer and trip odometer reading by default like my STX cluster did?
Even with that one little hickup, everything else works perfectly and I have no regrets.

Glad to hear. My swap sounds similar, though my xl had the tach and the new one will be pretty much the same. Being that I have a manual and the new cluster is from an auto, I'll I have to do is press in two clips, pull the "PRND21" out and put in the black filler price from my current cluster.
Except, I was thinking that it too would probably have the ambient temp and compass. I would also like to get that working if possible.
Question for you, when you start the truck, above the mileage, it now defaults to the temp and reads dashes right? Does pressing the button that sticks out still cycle through and give you trip miles? And does the xlt have trip a and b or just a single trip?
I know the ambient temp sensor mounts right below the hood latch in front of the radiator, I need to see if there's existing wires there.
I happened to take pictures of each odometer in order to document the mileage difference.
My stock STX odometer is on the right, and the new XLT odometer is on the left. As you know, the STX odometer has the mileage on top with the trip odometer below. The XLT has the temp and compass on top, and the mileage below. When you press the button on the XLT the bottom scrolls between the odometer and trip odometer but the temp and compass is always there. I cant remember whether the XLT has multiple trip odometers..
It would be nice to make the temp and compass work, but I think I would be just as happy if I could program it to have the same format as the STX..

Thanks for posting that. I know what to expect now. I've searched Google to see if anyone has added the ambient temp sensor and made it work, but there is no solid info.
I would have rather gotten the STX/XL cluster from one with a manual, but there was nothing available. Plus, the new clusters current miles will be within 200 miles of my current odometer by the time I install. Got lucky there.
Lastly, your door chime with the keys in the ignition still sounds? And your interior lights still come on when the door is open, right?
I'd read about those not working, but I believe that's if you try to jump from an xl/STX/xlt cluster to one from the higher end models.
I cant help you with that because my door adjar switch is out and I deliberately de-soldered the chime so I don't have to listen to it. I did that on my original cluster and this one before putting it in. My lights already don't come on when I open the door because I wired the door adjar switch to always be closed (It was saying the door was open when it wasn't, and would chime randomly driving down the road). So now the truck doesn't know when I open the door, this has caused un-intended problems and I don't recommend it.
The chime on the other hand I am happy to be without.
I had an XLT prior to my FX4. The XLT only has one trip meter, as does my current Lariart cluster in the FX4. IMO, kind of a mis-sight, on Ford's end...
I called my goto ford dealer today to asked if they could reprogram the display, they told me that the the gauge cluster from an XLT wont work in my truck period, never mind the display issue... I thought about telling them that it was already installed and worked fine but didn't feel like going round and round with them...
Maybe I will keep an eye out for an STX manual model... IDK. I really like the look of the gauges so I may just leave it.
Installed the xlt cluster. Everything works, except, as I kind of figured, my interior lights no longer come on when the door is open, no chime with key in ignition, no chime when lights are left on and no mileage display on the dash when the truck is off with the door open.
I think I'm just going to send my old cluster in to be fixed. I don't really like that the lights don't come on when you open the door.
I also spoke with a ford dealer about the as build data. They want over $400. 2.5 hours of labor as they said they'd need to reinstall my old cluster, pull the data, install the new cluster, add the data and also charge me for a chipped key because they need two for the programming and I only have 1.
I just poped my hood to see if I had the correct wiring harness for the ambient air temp module and it turns out, my truck actually has the temp module already installed. Does anyone know what that little box below it is? I'm wondering if that could be the compass.
If anyone knows how to get this going I would appreciate it...

Yeah, no, no, no. Don't mess with that box. That is the crash sensor for the airbags...The compass clips onto the mirror mount. Might have to fish around under the front edge of your headliner to see if the wires are there.
