2004 5.4l f150 Transmission Fluid Change

I recently dropped the Transmission pan, removed the old filter (and the old filters o-ring gasket), and cleaned everything up to re install. The problem I ran into is that when I went to put the new filter in, it went up kinda snug. I pushed will all I had, but I couldn't seem to get it all the way up? SO, I pushed it up and crawled from underneath to go get my pan gasket, came back 3 mins later and the filter fell out. So I pushed it back up as best I could and installed the pan. The pan was about 1/2 inch or so from contacting the transmission, so I put the screws in and tightened it up with ease.

My question, has anyone else experienced this problem? Im not sure if by me tightening the oil pan that it shoved the filter into place, or if maybe it just bent/crushed the filter?

I have not driven the truck since I did that, I do not feel very good about the install. Thinking about buying everything again and starting over?

Any suggestions?? Thanks

I have installed these filters by pushing upward and moving the filter side to side until tight. I don't like the way they sit in the hole, but that's the way Ford made them. If you are unsure that it is in tight, I would redo it! May be someone else could add to this ,since we have a lot Trans experts on the site.

It does fit snug but it should not fall out. Did you use a Motorcraft filter?

no i didn't......i changed it right when i got it (6 years ago) and used a filter from advance, but i don't remember how it went it.

I just feel like the pan should go over the filter and fit tight to the transmission, I shouldn't have to snug it tight with the screws?
