Edge evo programmers, worth it?

I just got a 07 xlt 5.4 v3 stock for now. Wanted to get an edge evo first and do the gotts mod until I can get a real intake. Either a s&b or volant powercore. What do yall think? Thanks for any help

The stock intake is a real cold air intake and delivers all the air your engine can handle. An aftermarket intake is louder and looks a little cleaner but does almost nothing for performance. It can add maybe 10 hp but even that requires a custom tune.

If you think you want a Evo, buy a Gryphon from PHP. That way you can get custom tunes later, they are the only people that can custom tune an Edge product and custom tunes are 1/2 price if you buy the device from them in the first place.

Why would I need a custom tune for an edge product if I get a gryphon? Are they affiliated with each other? Sorry if I sound stupid I'm new to fords

Let's try this a little differently. A Gryphon is an Edge device that's been modified by PHP to accept custom tunes. Some Edge devices don't have to be modified to take custom tunes, but either way PHP is the only company that can write custom tunes for any Edge devices. If you are going to get an aftermarket intake, you WILL need custom tunes, the Edge or Gryphon canned tunes will cause it to run too lean.

So - buy an Edge or Gryphon from PHP, it will come with canned tunes. WHEN you get your intake, then order custom tunes from them. If you buy the device from them in the first place, custom tunes are 1/2 price from what they would be if you bought the device elsewhere. NOTE that not all Edge devices can be custom tuned, so buy one that CAN be from PHP.

There are other programmers that can be custom tuned, primarily from SCT or Diablo, and there are a lot of companies that can do that. However, it would make sense to buy the device from the company that you will be using to write the custom tunes - again, you WILL need custom tunes for your specific intake. This is an issue with all 5.4 3 valve engines due to MAF characteristics.

Thank you! I did some research in the meantime but that helped even more. I notice most ppl on here are SCT bias are the that much better than an evo for our V8s? Or is it mainly the custom tunes?

Also I don't want a loud truck I just got rid of one and quiet neighborhood etc just doesn't like it plus it's hard to sneak in late so exhaust doesn't seem like a possibility. I wish it was, I've had catbacks on all my vehicles til this one. Anyway is there a quiet enough performance exhaust or what else should be my next step after tuner and intake?

Believe it or not, your stock exhaust is already low restriction - unless you go with headers too all an aftermarket exhaust will do is make more noise, and some can even hurt your low end torque. I wouldn't even do an intake - just do the Gotts and get a good set of tunes.

People here are SCT biased because it's the best device for a Ford and there are some really good tuning houses that use them. Their new X4 is probably one of the best programmers on the market. The Dodge/Ram guys swear by Diablo. Edge is decent, but other than the canned tunes you would be locked in to PHP for any custom work. I personally wouldn't buy an Edge unless all I wanted it for is the gauges.

...and unless you plan on forced induction, you don't need to spend any money for a CAI. As previously mentioned, they won't add much except in the high RPM range which isn't where truck engines normally operate. Most CAIs move/modify the MAF sensor location, which normally causes tuning issues (read; now you really DO need a tuner to fix that). If you want to increase airflow potential without causing that issue (and save hundreds of $$) look into the "gots-mod".

Same goes for the exhaust. Stock really is very efficient flow, unless you go forced induction. Most people that want/get modified exhausts are really just wanting a certain sound (louder). ...readers, don't be hatin', my Harley is plenty loud. Just too cheap to toss a working muffler on the truck. If it [ever] gets holed, I'll probably get a louder one.

As to the tuner, that's like asking what brand oil is the best... A firestorm of opinions will erupt. I do personally have a Gryphon, but that's because I got a good deal on it and wanted the gauge/pod. If I got a newer truck that had a better gauge display I might well go with the SCT.

Best bang for the bucks would be; 1st. tuner of your choice, 2nd. gots-mod.
Then if you just can't stand it (saving money, that is), you can spend tons of money on all kinds of stuff. Like unicorns.
