Tapping noise

Recently I had a misfire on cylinder1 Found out the coil was bad. This cause the O2 sensor on bank 1 to show bad (stuck rich). When I moved the truck to replace the O2 sensors I started getting a tapping sound from the engine. The oil and filter had just been replaced. Oil is full.

My question is could this be a lifter or something else. Oil pressure shows good. Can't pinpoint were the noise is coming from. Thought maybe the alternator or pulley.

The O2's are NOT bad - they are doing their job trying to tell you something is wrong on Bank 1!

Post. All. The. Codes.

Recommend you just take it in - yer obviously out of yer depth troubleshooting this.

Hey.

Sorry aboot the wife - hope she's okay!

Those codes can be indicative of leaking injectors, which the other thread elaborated on.

Or - it could be valvetrain-relaetd as that link explains.

Left unattended, it can severely damage the engine. Taking it in to get them checked may in fact be yer best recourse.

Best of luck!

Thanks MGD.

After it started tapping I knew it was over my head. Sad part it's a 2005 with 130,000 miles on it and I've never had a problem with it. I've got a friend that works on Fords. He wants me to leave it here and he will come by and check it first.

Will update after I find the problem

Good news I hope.

A friend of mine came by and the guy with him works on Fords.
First thing he did was disconnect the battery. waited 15 minutes and hooked it back up. Restarted the engine and had NO CODES. Ran engine for 15 minutes.

He checked the tapping noise (with a long screw driver). Said it could be one or both cam phasers or the timing belt Said it would be about $200 for both cam phaser and a $100 labor. If its the timing belt could cost about $2000

You don't have a timing belt, it has chains.

Hey.

Depends on whether the front cover is to be removed or not - labour goes way up in that case. And it typically needs to come off to inspect guides and tensioners.

We've got a few techs here who could supply costs and shop rates if yer not into doing it yerself. Also - Tasca, Rockauto, etc fer parts cost info. OEM only recommended. Avoid Dorman.

Good luck

MGD thanks for all your help. I have a friend that put me in touch with the parts man at Williamsburg Va. Ford. When I call about the O2 sensors he said he would sell them to me for $66 each. The other Ford dealer what's $97 for up and $66 for down. Think I'll call l him for the cam phasers

(you'll need new seals too):

SEAL PART #: 3L3Z-6C535-AA

Tommy I have an 08 F-150 that had the same issue. It was the cam phasers. After all was said and done it ended up costing over $4,000. Thank god for warranties. I bought the truck used about 6 months ago and have been cleaning up after the previous owner since. So far I have dropped about $3,000 in out of pocket expenses into the truck. between warranty deductibles and other misilanious expenses but I can say this it is an awesome truck and am very happy with it.

Up date on my tapping noise. here is what I was told. "Found an injector has failed on bank 2 causing fuel to wash down into the oil, the timing chain now constantly rubbing the timing cover, has causing other damage to the engine. Suggest a remanufactured engine due to cost of a tear down and repair." Sounds like my 5.4 is gone
