yeah , "what's proven" is the motor crap ain't so great either

310 000 KM's on my 5.4 and it's had at least 10 - 12 ford coils put in it since my father bought it new in 01

I bought 2 since I took over the truck 3 years ago and another when it blew out the spark plug because it snaped off the tab for the bolt - which joyfully was one of the new ones I put in it

no freeking more
I'm not saying buy the asian junk but I'm not letting ford riffle through my pockets anymore either

I had no issues with my 95 4.6 and it's coil packs but whoever came up with these ford cop's best cross to the other side of the street if he sees me comeing
- along with his idiot buddy that thinks a champhered plug is going to stay tight in a champhered hole
I'm sure the customers have spent a #### ton more money than ford saved not useing a simple compression washer to keep the stupid spark plugs from backing outta the holes

canadian ford dealer rate = 3 hun to fix the plug thread ... and another 5 hun just to change out the other 7 plugs
+ 13% sales tax

none of which I'd need to spend if ford had their #### right to begin with
- and don't even get me started on the heavy duty rads the trucks were supposed to get but ford never bothered to install when they built the thing
- part of the cost when you buy the truck but do ya get any kind of rebate for the non existing parts .. no

I love the truck
it's one of the best rideing / driveing vehicles I've ever owned - but I hate ford corp's guts and everyone responsiable for this B S

... and don't believe for 1 second either that ford dosen't get corperate welfair either
the ontario government invested over 80 million bucks of taxpayer money into the plant here where production of the new 5.0 motors started ... then ford shuttered the plant

Dang, that's rough. That sucks honestly. I have never had a problem with my cops. And nothing wrong with my 07 cops at 88k ( knock on wood)..
If you didn't wanna invest in motorcraft you can get Visteon. Made in the same factory as motorcraft. Hope your luck gets better with your Ford.

I hope you guys are right and its just a simple cop change. otherwise I am going to cry.... this is my work truck and DD I need to get it running asap.

CoPs should hold up to at least 150k miles...any less and you would have room to gripe.

Motorcraft are better but not perfect. In Jan 2013 at 170k miles on my 2002, I replaced all 8 CoP's with Summit Racing brand figuring they usually rebadge good brands (especially ignition parts) and don't put their name on junk. 2 were bad when they arrived and had to get replacements. Between the 90 day return policy expiring and 6 months, 5 of the 8 had failed. I convinced them to give me credit for what I had already spent towards a set of 8 Motorcrafts. Two of those was faulty when it arrived, another failed after 3 weeks. But after that, all held together somewhat except an intermittent problem on #6 which I suspect had more to do with the valves at 215k. Luckily, before I could get around to my Spring maintenance projects it puked a spark plug and I traded for a 2008.

I still wish I had gotten MC upfront. Nothing more frustrating than playing wack-a-mole with your engine.

I'll also add that I recommend replacing all 8. Besides peace of mind, they are a lot cheaper that way.

wow so there is no way to tell of they are good unless you keep switching them until they work?

Yeah, there's a right way to clean your engine and a wrong way... I did this pretty early on in my old 97 F150's new life with me... After a week of eating dust on a camping trip, it looked like this.

I washed it, but used a pressure washer like Warren did and only let the MIST rinse it off and I stayed away from the top of the engine as well as the obvious electrical parts, but it still turned out like this after wiped it down with some tire shine stuff.. No issues what so ever.. Did it a couple of times after that too.. I never lost a COP in over 255,000 miles.. Well, I did on #4. The heater hose dripped in it and killed it... (known issue for the early models)..

As for your fixing the problem, you are on the right track, remember after you pull the individual COP, make sure you use a shop vac to suck out any stuff down the plug hole before you put the new COP back on.. It'll take some work, but you should be able to get it done..

Good luck!

Mitch

For the effort involved in getting to some of them, I now test every CoP on #4 since its the easiest to get to. It might be overkill, but at least I know before buttoning up.

Sure you can. Start the truck, and unplug the harness going into a CoP. If the truck runs worse that CoP is working (at idle at least, not necessarily under load). Plug it back in and test the next one in the same way.

When installing new CoP's, I install each one on #4 regardless of where its going to wind up at. I do that because its the easest to reach and the fuel rail isn't in the way of removing it. Test that it works at idle, then install it on the cylinder it belongs.

I added seafoam to gas tank and oil problem gone...... go figure.

Sounds like it was a dirty injector then.. Use chevron/tehcron next time. Better for your engine instead of seafoam
