2004 5.4L 3v F150 - Clicking sound .. diagnosis?? No idea.. need some help

Hey everyone

I have another account here and used to log in with my Facebook account but for some reason it's asking me to change my password and I can't post to the forums until I update my password.. strange behavior since I logged in through an external site. Anyways.. I've uploaded a video to my YouTube channel where you will hear this really sharp 'Click' sound periodically.

I can't explain the noise... it's not the cam phaser sound (which you can clearly hear throughout the video).. anyways.. I'm concerned this is something mechanical just getting ready to break on me. I'm hoping someone in the community has heard this sound before and can help me figure out what to do here..

Also - the fan surges up and down in speed.. is that even normal for this engine?

Thanks in advance Ty

Is it the air con compressor clutch?

That's interesting you should say that.. my brother suggested that as well. He's a Ford mechanic.. I trust his opinion but wanted some others as well..

That could be it.

This feels like Jeopardy.. any other answers in the form of a question?

Thank you!!

Sounds like the compressor clutch to me, also. Turn your air conditioner off and see if the sound continues.

Did that. It comes on and off regardless.

Ok so let's say the diagnosis is correct. We've got 3 people suggesting it's the AC compressor clutch.

Causes for this behavior?
Likelihood that I'm about to see this part fail?
Fixes?

I'm pretty handy under the hood so I could likely fix the problem myself. I've heard it could be a result of low freon? Or the clutch is heading south..

I appreciate the feedback everyone!
Thanks
Ty

The clicking is the compressor clicking in and out. I doubt very much it's about to fail.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't ever recall hearing this noise so regularly and so loudly in the past though. That's the main reason for my post.

The A/C still blows cold so I'm questioning now if I'm being hyper sensitive to the noise and I shouldn't worry about it.

The other part of my post is concerning the way the fan is surging fast to slow to fast. I've never owned an F150 before and this is a bit unfamiliar to me. Is this behavior 'normal'?

Thanks again guys.
Ty

Mine makes this sound, but only when on. I have the camera close to the engine to hear the sound better.

Ok that's the clicking sound I hear but mine goes on and off even if the AC isn't turned on. So I suppose the next logical question is.. should the compressor be turning on and off like that when I'm not running the AC?

Doesn't seem like it should..
