Steering wheel controls

Quick question. The steering wheel controls on my 2004 Supercrew have had it. Only the station changer switch still works. Anyway, I have a pretty good idea on what needs to come off to replace the switches. But I was wondering if it is necessary to remove the steering wheel to replace the switches. On a side note, I can't believe the thing is still running.... just went over 280,000 miles.

I just upgraded to the cruise/radio/climate switches on my '05. I removed the steering wheel to get to the 4 nuts holding the buttons on. It's possible to do it with the wheel on, but it would take forever. The local Auto Parts store loaned me a wheel puller for free (with a credit card for deposit). Took me about 30 minutes to take off the wheel, swap out the switches and put everything back together... Just make sure you get the correct wheel puller if you choose to remove the wheel (it'll be the one with the hooks instead of the threaded studs).
