Steering wheel groan

Hey guys,

so a couple months ago my truck started to make a groaning noise when turning the steering wheel. Im pretty sure it sounds like a rubber grommet or something that needs a little lubrication.

I think this started when my truck died in the garage one night and i had to push it out into the driveway to jump but i had to really crank the steering wheel hard to the right with the truck off.

Does this sound familiar? what do you guys think it could be? it definitely sounds like it is coming from around the steering wheel and not the firewall

thanks

Have you read about the steering shaft? I currently have a shaft problem but it doesn't really groan, just feels like the power steering is intermittent.

Have you checked the power steering fluid level?

X2. I also would siphon the reservoir out and top it off with fresh fluid. It takes our Mercer V Trans fluid.

Cranking the wheel with the engine off can introduce air in the power steering system, so that might be good possibility. With the engine on and reservoir cap off turn the steering wheel to full lock left, right and continue through about 10 cycles. Check the level both hot and cold. In many cases cranking the wheel will get rid of any air in the lines.
Other than that, it could be losing fluid somewhere but you didn't mention it was low or discovered any leaks.

digging this up again because i never got around to it. I will try taking the steering fluid cap off and turning the wheel.

However i do not think this could be the case because it sounds like its coming from in the cab, literally sounds like a piece of rubber that is not lubricated and is moaning when i turn the wheel. Another thing though is that it only really seems to do it when the engine/truck is cold but seems to stop once it gets warmer.

Ill report back with the cap trick and cranking the wheel though

Had an almost identical noise coming from the power steering in my wife's '05 Escape a few months back -- flushed and filled the power steering fluid and the noise was gone immediately.
