my truck and its problems.... couple questions.
05 5.4 3v xlt
Come over to this forum.. seems to be more helpful and active..
I bought an 05 XLT 5.4 this year.. been nothing but problems...
instead of starting a bunch of new threads.. ill just ask all in this one..
1. Can Phasers really blow out within 3k miles of being replaced?
2. P0358 just came up with new plugs and cop install.. but no wire arc, wire looks and feels good, changed CoP (code didnt follow).
3. Will the 09+ factory foldable bed extender fit the 04-08?
4. How do you know if the Cat is clogged? I have this strange bogging down symptom and cant get over 35ish plus it sound like there is a loud "ping" coming from the Cats.
Done/History (since i bought it few months ago):
Plugs (MC) and CoPs (accell super)
Timing and Components
Oil Pump
Water Pump
Phasers
FM Super 44
Fuel Filter
Has/Have:
Passenger side exhaust leak at manifold.
ty all!!

Along with Gotts Intake Mod untill i can get a CAI

On the cats, bring it up to operating temp and take it out for a hard run. When you stop look underneath and see it they are glowing red. If they are then they are plugged. You can also check the temp with an infrared thermometer, sorry I don't know the temp spec.
Not going to be a whole lot of help without more information.
#1. How many miles? Since you threw an oil pump at it, I have to assme a LOT.... Did you inspect everything else in the long block and bolt ons or just toss a pump in and call it good?
#2. What other codes is it throwing?
Your P0358 could be due to a defective COP. or several defective COPs... That would also explain your sluggish running behavior.
Cam phaser issue. Going bad so soon after redoing it sounds very, very wrong... Either whomever did the work didn't do something right, or they did not use proper replacements to prevent the issue from recurring. I believe there is a TSB that specs the part #s needed for this job... Mine has yet to need to get done.

when we got the truck (i think back in feb @180xxx miles) it needed timing components (didnt realize it till it was to late) so the timing was done and i mean everything to do with the timing.
1. Timing History
Cleaned down the Valve covers, timing cover, dropped the oil pan, cleaned it as well. So inside and out will be cleaned..
Replaced: Oil Pan Gasket, (2) Pashers w/ bolts, Valve Cover Gaskets, (2) VCT w/ seals, Timing Cover Gasket, Complete Timing Chain System w/ oil/water pumps, Crank Oil Seal, trigger Wheel.
Also oil change with filter and antifreeze flush.
after that did Champion Double Plat Plugs and Accell Super CoPs and fuel filter.
monthish or so later put on Flowmaster Super 44. Started truck and got to temp, driver side valve cover has phaser tick.
it ticks only at idle at temp, once gas is pressed it goes away. so had to use truck, got gas at some town ive never been in... within 30 mins of getting gas there the truck started bucking like a misfire (remember new plugs and cops) well by time i got home the bucking was horrible like it was out of gas and wanting to die... pulled codes, 1, 7 and 4 misfire, and random misfire. soo i remember researching this truck will eat any plug besides MC, so i went and got MC plugs and redid all 8 plus swapped CoPs on the Misfires.. didnt follow the cops.. got to temp and got the P0358 code.
in between all that. i had a hub bust.. during installation of a new one. the threaded end of the cv axle busted during nut tightening.. so ive also got new suspension parts on driver side.. hub assembly, cv axle and strut w/ spring. also a window shatter so have new slider lol. also... new gatorback belt, tensioner puller system and two other pullies. also did big 3 upgrade.
currently sitting at shop with 182xxx miles
2. P0022 and the P0358
Timing Parts
2 Chains, Crank Sprocket, L/R Tensioner, L/R Tension Arm, L/R Guide Rail, Oil Pump, Water Pump and more...

recent video of the phaser.

Not sure but I have heard for years to only use the Motorcraft SP515 plugs and Motorcraft COPs on these engines.
If wiring is looking right, and you didn't break anything electrically replacing the COPs, your COPs at least one of them isn't sending the reply signal needed causing your P0358 code...
Wondering, since you swapped the COPS and you say the misfire stayed on those same cyls, possibly something got damaged wiring wise when you were doing the swapping?
Honestly I am grasping at straws here to help you...

im grasping to, it got sent up to the shop..
i swapped the CoPs from the misfiring cylinders when i put in new plugs.. no misfire on them.. matter of fact no misfire anywhere if you do the pull the connector test.. i pulled the connector that connects to the CoP and the engine would run rough for a few secs... but when you get underload or even slight press of gas itll start misfire.. i cant find a misfire on any of them after plugs were changed nut the p0358 and bogging down is still there.

Hmmm.
If sparky is happening at the right time, what about cam / crank things happening at the right time? (I.E,. that would be your cam phaser issue...). Not familiar enough with VVT / Cam phasers to speak intelligently about it... But perhaps something slipped a tooth or two? I know if cam timing is off on a traditional engine, bad, very bad things happen, like valves smashing into pistons...

thats my biggest fear is slipped a tooth when the phaser went. ive got the new phasers sitting here on the floor cause they were under warranty. if they tell me phaser and or timing im locking out my phasers... ive never dealt with vvt and dont want to lol.
buddy of mine told me sounded like clogged cats and bad o2s i guess they are known for not throwing the code if they are bad...

Just got back from Shop with Cylinder 8 and 4 misfire.. With brand new CoPs and plugs!!!!! he said he swapped 8 with one that was working and it fired up and the Code did not follow.
However he wouldnt mess with 4 cause he doesnt have proper tools.. It wasnt a ford Stealership.. so I guess im going to them next.

so tried my test with my wife in the truck, palm code reader hooked up... with truck running cleared codes i pulled number 8. instant code came up along with you could tell a motor change.
ok plugged it back in shut truck right off... cleared codes.. start it back up.. now do it to 4.
Truck running unplug number 4 instant code but NO motor change..
so now im guess same thing he did.. either coil or plug.. both new.. wtf...

Ok so ROUND 3.. WTF!!! First Mech Shop... Cats not clogged.. 4 is missing all together... 8 is intermittent miss.
Take it to Ford... first Mech said couldnt touch it cause of the "special size" spark plug socket... yeah he only had standard.. plus he didnt feel like getting into it..
SO FORD gets it... Ford says "phaser on driver side is bad" (i knew that) and hooks it up to the machine.. No fire on 4 at ALL he shows me the chart... 8 has a low miss and 4 isnt hitting at all?!?!?!?!?!?! He apologies for not being able to dig into it further right now, but he has to take care of 13 recalled cars at the moment so he says no charge..
damn really... all we did was change plugs to MC plugs cause of a miss and Old broken CoPs to Accel.. This is what I get for getting gas at a place that looks shady! ********
still wont get over 30 mph bogs out.. wont throw codes for ANYTHING but po358 even though he knows for sure with proof that 4 is the one missing! now what should I do?
