magnefine filter install, problem maybe

truck is an 08' F150 w/5.4 4x4

i followed this video:

i did the install and

2 things concern me:

A) i dont understand why when i cut the hose coming off the passenger side return line and start the truck there would be fluid coming out of both lines, which there is @ the same flow rate it seems. its like there is some kind of check valve that maybe when the fluid gets too hot it flows from the cooler but if its not hot enough it flows from the trans, if the filter has a flow direction wouldn't this impede the flow rate of the lines?

B) i didn't check the temp of the lines before the install so i have nothing to compare it to, but after the install when i grab both the supply and return line from the cooler after a 10 mile stop and go ride taking about 20min total, both the lines feel the same temp wise to the touch, which is too hot to hold for more than a sec or 3. does that sound right? i cant afford to cook this trans right now.

thanks

For what it's worth...

That is the filter that Ford includes with replacement transmissions...Have one on my truck...I replaced it about 3 years ago, after about 3 years of service (after new transmission), and cut the old one open...no check valve, just a cylindrical magnet. Mine was coated with fine metal...probably time to change again. Transmission was replaced at 51k...at 156k now...

maybe i'm paranoid about the temp of the return line, being as hot as the supply, when i touched it (touching the steel portion of the line)

still dont get why fluid would seem to flow from both sides once the rubber hose is cut on the return.

If you follow the trans line back you will see they pass through a small aluminum block before you get back to the transmission. That is a thermal check valve. If I recall, the valve is very close the the transmission itself. Fluid only gets pumped to cooler when it is hot. That is supposed to keep the fluid from being over cooled. Maybe the valve always allows some fluid to pass at a low flow rate, then fully opens when hot.

Is the flow rate you are getting low? I have no clue how vavle works. Perhaps one side of output to the cooler is always under pressure, with the actual valve closing off the other output to the cooler. With everything connected, no flow through cooler even though it is under pressure. With lines cut open it is allowing flow. That coupled with gravity draining you cooler and I could flow from both line. Just speculating here...

...or maybe your thermal valve is bad.
