You're right. No way I'd pay that much for a 10 year old truck. It's the 4x4 that jacks the price up. I bought mine at 6 years old with half the mileage for $14k . . . from a dealer. So that's like $12k private party.

You have to remember different areas of the country will affect the price of a truck. I bought my 2004 FX4 SCab with 112k miles for $11,500 in February. The same dealer had a 2006 FX4 SCrew with 250k+ miles as well as a leveling kit and nice wheels and tires, sold same day I bought mine for $9k.

I agree. Yours is a much nicer truck though, too. Leather, 20k less miles, etc.

California's (brand new) truck prices are right exactly around Texas'. According to kbb for Houston, $10.4k is private party for a "good" condition truck, so if the truck is in good shape, good tires, etc., it's a good price. Northern trucks are considerably more expensive for some reason.

It just blows my mind that a 10 year old, high mileage truck, is still worth that much, you know?

Yeah I agree. Seems as if they have been holding their value better the last few years, maybe because new trucks are easily $35k and that's just for a mid-level truck.

Here in Utah, private sellers are asking for as much as $15k for their 2004 F150s. One in particular is a Lariat SCrew 4x4 with 104k. Most prices seem to range from $11-13k even with 130-150k miles, although work trucks and very high mileage F150s are $10k and under.

My cousin just bought a 2004 XLT screw 2wd with a 5.4 and 58K on the clock, she paid 10,500 for it in north east Ohio.

Used truck prices around here in PA are high. The 05 fx4 I traded in with 93k on the clock dealer wants almost 15 grand for it. I haven't looked in a while but anything 08+ with under 100k usually around 20 grand on lots. Seems like anymore the f150s are holding their value which is good for us.

It's crazy to think that after 10 years and 100k miles, the truck has only lost a little less than half its value.

Which is about right. If it were 4x4, I bet it would've been close to $15k. That $4k paid for 4WD new doesn't depreciate for some reason, and the 2WDs are worth less up there than they are down here where we don't need them.

Good for those like you, who bought new, and good for those like me, who bought before this "price increase bubble." Even I paid what I feel was a lot, and that was with getting a smokin' deal way less than everything else I was looking at. But for the folks trying to get a used one right now, it's not a good thing!

You're telling me... I was originally shopping for a 2003-2004 Dodge Dakota Crew 4x4. A clean one with lowerish miles (120k or less) was $9-10k easily. I couldn't bring myself to buy one when I could get something nicer and more capable for just a little extra money. Even the ugly 2005+ Dakotas are bringing an easy $14-18k depending on options. I like the size but dislike the price for what you get. That's why I decided to go back to looking at F150s and just be patient and wait for a truck I really liked. I'm glad I did instead of settling for something else.

Gas Dodge 1500s don't hold their value for crap down here, so that's interesting. When I was looking, all the Dodges were $2-3k+ cheaper for the same options, mileage, etc. Ford and Chevy 1/2 tons were about the same, but I would've only been interested in 08+ Chevy's for the cylinder deactivation and new body style. The cost to capability ratio is always off with those 1/4 tons, which is why I don't understand them, especially when they don't get much better gas mileage.
