2004 speedometer issue

My 2004 F150 4x4 lariat 5.4 is having issues with the speedometer. it will stick at various speeds when I cut it off and stay there. when I start it up to drive it will still register increasing speeds. some times it will drop back to zero and work again. I have disconnected the battery and grounded it out for about 10 minutes and it may work for a day or just a few miles. I have a actron tester and it is not putting out any codes or pending codes. I recently had a complete phaser / timing chain replacement done due to the loud dieseling it was doing, I know the wiring harnesses had to be removed from the computer attached to the passenger firewall to remove the valve covers to do this job. that is the only work I had done. The cruise control works while the speedometer has issues, everything functions and reads properly as it should. Need help! is it a sensor acting up, or the speedometer going bad, or could there be a short some where. anyone experience this or have some mechanical knowledge would appreciate some suggestions.Thx

2004 F150 Lariat speedo not working

I have the exact same issue with the same truck. Had my heads removed to get the spark plugs out since they all broke. Have you figured out if you have a bas cluster or some other issue?

I am having the same issue with my 2004 F150 as well. I will also get a weird power surge where it seems like my alternator is going out, but when we run the codes, nothing comes up. Zero codes. Any ideas will be helpful as we've been to three different mechanics and they can find the problem.

2004 F150 speedo issue

I replaced my cluster with used from an auto wrecker. They tell me that there are 100+ different clusters for that truck so remove yours and find the model # on the back and ask them if they have a cluster with close to same mileage as yours. I paid 100 in Canada for mine model 4L34 10849 FN so if you can get one for close to that same price, I would go that route before getting a speeding ticket. Mine works fine now but mileage is off. Dealer wants 1200 for a new speedo and said mine could not be re programmed with same mileage without sending back to Ford so I placed a sticker on my windshield with the difference in mileage from my old odometer to the new odometer for future reference. Good luck.

There are a couple places on-line that will rebuild your cluster for about 150, bout to have mine rebuilt for the dash brake light always on issue. I also won't be picking up someone else's cluster issues and the odometer will not need to be programmed to keep things right. Just google for your cluster removal and repair. Those repair shops will pop on the list.
