New Terra or Trail Grapplers???

Hey guys, I need a little advice. So my tires have been worn all the way down and its time to get some new ones. I went to discount tire today intending to order some 285/65-18 terra grapplers to replace my 295/70-18 terras in order to get some of the power and mpgs back. But the tire guy told me it would take a few days to get the terras in. He then offered to give me the same size trail grapplers for the same price as the terras because he had them in stock. What are your thoughts? Would I still gain some mpgs downsizing? What about the general ride noise level vs terras? Thanks!

I love my Trail Grapplers, they've got about 9K miles on them so far and aren't showing much wear. They are getting a fair amount louder than they were new, they were as quite as my old Yokohama Geolander AT/S originally. They're great on anything except for snow, but that's what you can expect from an MT tire.

Being the heavier M/T, I don't think you will gain much economy back with the smaller size M/T. Drop down to a 33" Terra or have the Terras ordered.

You're giving up 1 and 3/4" of tire diameter, so if you're after MPG, I say at least down size and get what you're wanting from it with the lighter Terras.

Down-sizing tires and worries about road noise - is somebody getting older?

Unless you've calibrated your speedo for the larger size AND then recalibrate it for the smaller size, I don't see how you'd know your true MPG's anyway.

Do you need trails? I don't get running mud terrains on the road 99% of the time.

in my opinion terra crapplers are the worst tire other than a pavement queen if he said same price i would jump on the trail grapplers even if you only go off the road every once in a while just my opinion though (i have terra grapplers, never thought id own them but i paid 200$ for a barely used set of 33s) i still hate them

You're just about the only person I've ever heard of that "hates" Terra Grapplers or Toyo Open Country A/T's, lol. Worst tire in what aspect? They usually last 50-60K on most every vehicle I've seen them on. They went a shade over 60K on my truck without so much as a hint of problems. They are as quiet or moreso than any other A/T I've used. Finally, they seem to get decent traction off-road every time I've used them. Sure, they aren't made to dig through mud half-way up the tire, but it does just fine on loose ground and mud a couple of inches deep. There aren't many other A/T tires that would out-perform the Terra/Open Country A/T for ~$800/set.

sugar sand, light mud 2-3inches deep they just spin, id rather have bf goodrichs for a/ts, like i said if your only going to stay on the pavement then terra grapplers are great for street tires

Trail Grapplers...but I'm biased. They are one sexy tire. These probably aren't the tires for you though if you are worried about MPG. I can't compare road noise with the Terras because I've never owned them. But they are noticeably louder than stock tires, but not loud enough to bother me. I can obviously hear them while driving, but not obnoxious. If MPG and road noise are of any concern, then don't get them. But if you want an awesome looking tire, get the Trails.

I vote for the Trail Grappler as well. I had them before and had no problems. There's a little road noise but their offroad performance is excellent.

Downgrading an inch won't give you more power and mpg... I'd say suck it up and stay with the size you already have... Get a programmer to grab a little power but not to much... My neighbor runs the Terras with no complaints... His second set.. I run the Trails with no complaints.. Either or I think you're good to go...

Just another opinion. Had yoko geos on the 06 5.4 4x4, good mileage , about 55,000. Good highway,ok off road , useless in snow. Local tire dealer recommened the toyo at'2. put on a set of 275/70R/18. A little louder on the highway, not much, good off road, major improvement in the snow. Bought a new 2013 eco. 4x4 lariat off road. At 36 miles went down to the tire store and traded in the new tires and put the toyo at 2 on the new truck. Wife now drives the 06 and i the 13. IMO the at2 is a great compromise between a at and a mt. More aggressive then an at and not as, as a mt. had mt's 1 time. Way to noisey and terrible mileage. And face it, they look cool, but most of us spend 99% of the time highway. We live in the middle of utah around 6500 feet and have a second home in the high country around 10,000 feet. The AT2 has proven itself in the snow, wet and powder. Just another opinion, and 2 cents worth.
