Cooper or Good for a Year?
Cooper or Good for a Year?
Winter is coming and I have to make a decision. Cooper AT/3 or Goodyear Silent Armor? The Goodyear dealer will match the price of the AT/3s. I wanted BFG All-Terrains but they don't make them in 275/55R20.
Mind you, I am no expert in snow. But from what I recall when I actually did drive in snowy conditions, BFG ATs were fantastic in the snow...
I would tend to want to be more flexible with size than tread pattern. 285/60R20s aren't that much larger than 275/55R20...

275/60/20s are barely, if not at all, more expensive than the 275/20/20s. BFG ATs should be available in the 275/60/20, I know for sure they are in the 275/65/20. But BFG ATs are a lot more expensive than the two you mentioned (I know cause I wanted them and didn't want to pay for them). In the AT3, the 275/60/20s are right at $200 a piece IIRC.
Now, not having ever had either tire, I'll say this. I walked into Discount wanting AT3s and, due to "salesman persuasion," was walked out with BFG Rugged Terrains for like $4 more per tire. And I've heard people complain about Silent Armors (can't remember what, just know the words have a negative connotation to me) and the tread pattern doesn't look as aggressive as the AT3. Useless info, I know, but that's what I got.

AT or anything mud oriented tire suck as soon as you hit ice or hard packed snow.
My LTX-MS on my ranger wasn't very good..and bad compare to the Yoko G720(or something like that)
Same thing for my BFG rugged trail on my f150 compare to my cheap studded winters(which are not better then the Yoko's)

That's why many people buy sipping knives. Takes a few hours per tire depending how detailed you are but well worth the effort on road and off. Nothing works good with ice; most mud tires can be studded rather easy for better ice handling.
Check out the good year duratracs. Theyre awesome in the snow....theyre rated for snow and ice... they have the mountain snowflake symbol on them.... they were slightly cheaper than bfg at tires when I bought mine. My truck had no problems while in utah with 10 inches of snow and in 4x4. Plus ive got about 30k on them and theyre about half way worn.
I picked up a pair of the AT3 and couldnt be more happier. 285/70/17 for 1060 mount and balanced. I pull allot of trees from the woods and run into some muddy conditions and let me say these things dig well for being a AT tire. I got the 10ply only because they were a few bucks more than the rest and it doesnt hurt since I been hauling a good bit of wood and coal. But there is no road noise yet and the ride of them is fantastic. Plus a 55k tread wear warranty is always a +. So +1 on the Coopers. I always had good luck with cooper tires.

anyways..cooper usually has a nationwide promotion for buy 3 get one free..for the month of october...might want to check it out.
I bought Cooper Discoverer ATP's for my truck from Discounttire.com and so far I like them but they've only been on the truck for 2k miles. Theyre 10 ply E-rated tires and theyre pretty cheap and fairly aggressive.
