highway mpg and coolant gauge pegged

just starting to research this. I never really kept track of mpg's until this past July.

I commute 188 miles a day and getting 13.2-13.5 mpg. It's all highway except for 6 miles and I keep the cruise set on 73 via my GPS to ensure consistency.

I've been using various settings on my edge in an effort to maximize my mpg and have logged 3,234 miles to date while comparing.

I tried the level 3 tune with 93 and 89 octane. No difference in mpg.
I tried the level 2 tune with 87, 89 and 93 octane fuel. No difference in mpg
I'm going to try the level 1 tune with all 3 octane ratings but doubt there will be any difference in the mpg there.

I did have a tensioner fail this past summer so put a complete new timing kit in (tensioners, gears, phasers, chains and plugs, etc). My coolant gauge had fritzed out and is pegged all the time due to a bad ground or something. However according to my Edge display, the CHT and ECT are right where they are supposed to be.

When I first got the truck back in 06, I could get 600 miles out of a tank (with the same mods I have on it now), now I'm lucky to get 460. Is the coolant gauge screwing the PCM up and making it run out of whack? I got a catalytic converter code many moons ago but cleared it out and it has never come back. I have zero codes stored or pending.

I'd just disconnect the coolant gauge sender if I didn't have to pull the manifold to do it. Truck pulls fine and idles smooth as silk.

Any suggestions/thoughts?

I think you can get to the temp sensor by removing the alternator. But i could be wrong

460-600 miles to a tank? Im lucky to get anything over 300.

My truck normally gets 13-15 mpg with a mix of city and highway and on a trip this summer it got 18.8.

Ive also got an Edge programmer and 2" level. The mpg didn't change with the level and bigger tires (I changed the size on the edge).

i've got the 35.7 gallon tank and the 13.2mpg is strictly highway. In the city I'm lucky to get 11

I usually run zero-ethanol fuel, so it gets me another 15-20miles per tank than e10. I usually fill up with around 26 gallons when the DTE gets to around 15-20 miles.

I have almost the same setup but run 265/75R20. I usually get at least 17 on the highway...worst I get is 10-11 when towing. Have you tried monitoring the accelerator position on the Edge? Not intended to be dismissive but, if you're all gas and brake it kills mpg. Things that have gone bad for me that affect mpg: fan clutch- sometimes hear a whine; idler pulley- always hear a whine; spark plugs; and air intake clog. Are you reading the MPG on the Edge or have you calculated over several tanks...do the calculation.

All we have here is E10. Sucks.

I just did the timing kit, plugs and fuel filter about 7,000 miles ago. I put new oil in every 5,000 miles as well as clean the air filter. Put in the updated cam phasers about 75,000 miles ago. Motor is smooth and very quiet. Put new diff oil recently too. I even checked the toe in to see if I had excessive measurements but its spot on, as well as the tire pressure.

All calculations are done the old fashion way....odometer vs gas receipt and kept in an excel spreadsheet. The Edge says I'm getting 16.8...

I suppose I could try cleaning the MAF and do another trans flush? In the meantime, I'm going to pull the ol' e30 out of mothballs and drive it.

How long are you going before switching tunes? It may be that you're not giving the pcm enough time to relearn after flashing to a different tune. Maybe give it a couple tanks to reach its full potential.

Sorry, but I don't see why 17mpg highway with a leveling kit and 34's/35's is a "bad" number, especially if you really drive 73mph. Slow it down to 65 and I bet you see mid-17's. I have found that the mpg's start dropping pretty quickly above 60mph.

I'm getting 13 on the highway...not 17. I used to get close to 17 with the same tires/suspension setup etc a while back.

I've ran at least 3 full tanks on each tune before changing.

I dropped it down to 70 for the last two days and zero difference. Being passed by old ladies in Buick LeSabres is frustrating!

Driven a total of 4,226.9 miles and used 310.059 gallons this month. Thats an average of 13.63 gallons. 99.97% is highway. 4.4 miles city vs 184.1 miles highway each day. Oh well.
