temp gauge pegged!! NOW FIXED!

anybody ever seen this? With the ignition off, the needle rested at the 3/4 mark. After a few cycles of on and off, needle now rests at the 1/2 way mark with the ignition off. According to the edge, the cylinder head temp is right at 190 and the coolant reservoir is full....so ok there. No CEL either. Its almost as if the needle moved?!?! Or maybe a bad ground?!?

Now how to fix it...

I went into test mode by holding the trip button down for about 5 seconds, then turning the ignition to ACC while continuing to hold the trip button down. Released when the check gauge message appeared which made all the gauges do a sweep. Fixed the issue.

My guess is a bad gauge if it stays up with no power. Take the trim panel items off and un-plug the cluster and see what it does. If it stays up, my guess is a new cluster is in your future, or the needle came loose. Hopefully someone will come up with a better solution for you.

I've seen cars do this if the cooling system isn't working correctly, like an electric fan not working. The dummy gauge pegs to let you know there's an issue even though the truck isn't truely overheating

But that's while its running, don't know I've seen it with the key off

Disconnect your battery cable to reset the computer and see what happens. Strange deal there...

don't have an explanation as to why but thankfully it was an easy (and free!!) fix
