Most batteries are crap and come from one of two manufacturers in China.

Mark, the Diehard Platinum is an Odyssey.

 

Just got home from a "Costco trip", noticed that they still have their Kirkland Group 65 battery (850 CCA .... and it is the optional size for our trucks) with 3 year replacement, 100 month prorated warranty still for under $100 for Costco members.

I work at AAP and even with my employee discount, that's a smokin' deal these days, .... and it got top ratings from Consumer Reports back in 2012 when I bought the Group 65 that's in my '07 FX4 to replace the small failing group 59 that was stock.

AAP Gold's best warranty is 3 years replacement and 60 months prorated for comparison and many brands now have only the 2 or 3 year replacement .... no prorated.

Just as a side note ..... I have a Odyssey AGM orange battery in my Honda GL1500 Trike that was installed new in August 2004 and it's still strong ....
.... as is the NAPA Legend 75 that was installed in my 1977 F-150 in May 2003 (to replace the then dead 7 year old Legend battery that was slipped in in 1996) ....
.... and my two wheeled home made jump / portable power cart still relies on the Motorcraft Group 65 that came in my '01 Mercury as original equipment that I removed in 2006 prior to making a cross country trip, it has been used as a stand in in my 2007 FX4 once, my 2006 CVPI twice, and in my 1995 T-bird when it's 11 month old Champion battery failed a couple years back.

 

Should be putting the battery on the charger every so often as maintenance anyway. When left low, batteries sulfate. Get a charger at walmart or harbor freight. doesn't have to be fancy.

 

If you get an Odyssey/DH Platinum and want a charger, make sure it's AGM compatible.

I have 2 Diehard Platinums, 1 in the F150 and 1 in my duck boat ... since 2009. No problem.

My boat had been sitting in the garage since the end of January. I just took my boat out last week and it cranked right up. No maintenance, no charge ... it just works.

Same as in the F150, no problems.

In addition to the 930 cca's mentioned above, the Diehard Platinum also has 135 reserve minutes which is as good or better than many deep cycle marine batteries.

Pull the spec sheet on the Odyssey and the Diehard Platinum ... they are word for word and spec for spec the same. Only difference is one says Odyssey at the top and the other says Sears Diehard Platinum.

Yes, you will pay about $190-$220, but you will probably keep the battery when you sell/trade your truck. No more trading batteries every 2-5 years. The Odysssey online is $289 which actually makes the Platinum appear somewhat of a deal

It may not be worth it to everyone but it is to me. I use to hate battery problems. Now I don't have any.

(Also, my son that thinks I'm a moron has a Diehard Platinum in his Z71 )

 

I had a 12 year old original battery in my F250. My mechanic changed it when I had the truck in for service. He said it tested bad. No big surprise, but it had been starting the truck pretty well. It did good considering how hard it has to work to turn the engine over at 30 below.
