Installing Cam Phaser lockouts need some input.

My mechanic and I are tearing into my timing chain, cam phasers and VCT solenoids. I am going to go with the cam phaser lockouts. I know locking out the cam phaser needs a tune to go with it. I was wondering if I could do it myself since I have the SCT programmer. Does anyone in the know of tuning for this could answer this question would be much appreciated.

You need to contact one of the custom tuners and have them write you a tune. You can't do it yourself without SCT's (expensive) software and a lot of training.

So changing the parameters on my hand held programmer is not possible on my own? Thanks for your input.

What parameters would you change? If you have to ask, I don't think you could successfully do it. I sure couldn't.

Custom tunes aren't that expensive. Take a look through our programming forum and contact one or more of the highly regarded SCT tuners.

Note - the best tuner is Troyer, but you will wait months for your tunes. Others will have you something within a few days. They may need datalogging and adjustments, but you will have something to start with quickly.

I contacted Troyer today. I just finished data logging this afternoon, so will be emailing them the info and paperwork to get my tunes adjusted. I am concerned it will take long for a tune to come back. This is my DD and I am knocking out the maintenance this weekend.

I am also replacing the plastic timing chain tensioners for the metal tensioners. Shouldn't have any more issues with the timing chain unless it gets stretched out.

May I ask why you are locking the phasers out?

Well I am actually trying to solve a issue I am having with my valve train and timing. The engine noises have gotten louder, and louder the past 40k miles. Figured it was time to replace timing components, and while I was at it eliminate the cam phasers while in their.

Ended up not going with cam phaser lock out. Did not need to change the phasers either. Replaced the tensioners, guides, spark plugs and VCT solenoids. I also changed my fan clutch as it had gone bad. After inspection of the cam and everything else associated, my engine was clean and shows very minor signs of wear.

My plugs looked very normal for 60k+ since changed at Troyer performance.

My COP's look good, except 2 of them have some dirt in the connection area for the ignition wiring.

Hopefully everything will be buttoned up tomorrow and get this engine fired up. The rattle should be gone since the right tensioner was all the way out and both chains were about touching with tension on the chains.

Truck runs like it is new after changing everything. The knock is gone as well. So cam phasers were a non issue as the only thing I hear is a slight subtle tick from the injectors.

So the only problem I have is the transmission fill tube is leaking at the transmission.

My Mech somehow pinched the tube at the base and the thing was leaking a good amount of fluid. I will be replacing it tomorrow, the only problem I am having is how for the life of me do I snake this thing out? This 1 peice design sucks and is frustrating the heck out of me.

Any tips on how to remove the transmission filler tube?

New items getting worked on this weekend.

Replacing upper control arms left and right-Ball joint boot was torn on the passenger side.

Lower ball joints are getting changed as well.

So after running a 6" lift on 35's I have to say my truck really hasn't been all that bad maintenance wise.

I bought this truck with 44,000 miles on it. At 50k had the plugs changed and had Troyer tune it. Added the level kit and ran 34's.

At 70k added the procomp 6" lift no issues.

At 109k changed plugs, timing chain, tensioners, VCT solenoids, fan clutch, now upper and lower ball joints. I like my truck now that it is

After I get my title in hand the fun begins.

Camphasers finally broke. Timing chain guides broke, so my repair lasted about 8 months. This time cam phasers getting replaced, along with all the timing components. Lock outs are already installed in my new camphasers. Should have the truck back to running smooth wednesday. Maybe this time I will get more than 8 months out of the guides.
