Angry what is this part for and how can I seal it?

Hello,

behind the bench seat there are 2 air vents and when it's raining the water go tru the inlets and the water then flows under the carpet

anybody know what those things are for and how can I seal them?
I tried removing them without success..

They're to equal out air pressure, for example when the windows are up and you have the ac running. Otherwise window seals would start to leak because the air would have to get out somehow.

Are you sure water is coming through those and you don't have a rear window leak or third brake light leak?

Ah beat me to it 88 haha

Well, this one (link below) does appear to be still some wet .... was that a test or is that how you found it?

http://api.viglink.com/api/click?for...13639671617824

If you seal them up, when you shut the door there will be no place for air to escape. I'll have to look closer to say for sure .... but I can say to remove them, look at the top and at each end you'll see the "snap" in lock (they are on the inside of the cab, in your pics even) .... there likely are two more at bottom side. On the outer side of the cab I suspect there is a lip that runs all the way around the vent, the vent itself is only removed or installed from outside.

What you might want to try is to unsnap it and tilt out and apply a bead of silicone to the lip from inside the cab, apply the silicone so it'll seal that outer lip to the outside of the cab wall, and then pull back into locked position. Not sure you can reach these from outside the cab with bed in place, may have to do it from inside.

Now I have two things to check .... third brake light and vent seal. Maybe there's supposed to be a body - vent gasket?

All that tan dust sand looking stuff .... how fine is it?

the third brake light is leaking also yes, can everything be coming from the brake light? maybe

right now I've put some tuck tape on it and waiting for a replacement assembly from ebay

last time I removed the OEM assembly, put some silicone around it but it didnt help and it was a b*tch to remove the silicone, I have to scrap up to the bare metal under the assembly to remove the adhesive

should I seal it or do you think its all related to the 3rd brake light?
I have a hose I can try again with the tuck tape on it

--

it was a test, I put a hose on the brake light and tried to determine where the water was coming from, so yes from the 3rd brake light, but that doesn't really explain how the water gets to that inlet as its separated from the 3rd light

the tan and dust was there before, from the previous owner

the dust in the vents could be holding them slightly open as tbear853 was probably eluding to....might want to try and clean them....the third brake light seems to be a PIA on these trucks as far as leakage goes....

Well when you did the test did water flow out of the little catch cups at the bottom of the vent? It being damp like that is normal, it's not going to seal out everything, thats why those little catch cup things are at the bottom of the vent are there to drain it back out.

I'd fix the third brake light leak, pretty high chance that it's the cause of the problem.

You can seal them off completely if you want, but be prepared for more things to start leaking because the air pressure building up will mess with the seals for everything else. Those are the only cab vents short of always leaving a window cracked.

And fwiw mine are covered in dust and dirt and don't leak, I know it's a different body style, but basic same design.
