why no check engine light

my 08, 5.4, 106k, 4wd, lariat. i had a slight miss every once and awhile so i had the plugs changed at 100k. the clunk miss at low rpm has gone away after the plugs. however sometimes the truck will run horrible for a few minutes, usually in town durring stop and go. hard shaking, definitly a miss, but no CEL. im suspecting a cop is whats causing it, but why isnt it throwing a code. it has done it 4 or 5 times in the last couple months, and every time it lasted a couple minutes. im about to move and take a new job and dont want to do all 8 if i only need one.

any suggestions??

Mine did the same thing when my coil packs were going out. Eventually it will throw a code and tell you which one is the culprit, then after a while (hard to tell how long) another one will do the same thing. Eventually you will have them all replaced, or you can just do them all now and save the headache

You can buy them online much cheaper than that. You should be able to get an entire set for less than $150.

Well, no where in the coils did it say Motorcraft but the old ones didn't either. The numbers on the top of the coil match the old ones. The plain white boxes are marked "DG511". They don't come in manufacturing packaging as the ebayer states in the description. I just put them in yesterday and the truck is running better. I had the hesitation/bucking at certain RPMs that others had posted about. I read on hear that the Visteons go for around that price so they may be Visteons. If there are any problems, I will post. I also found a set of Motorcraft fuel injectors for $100. I think that was the only set he was selling though (different ebayer).
