Wrench light comes on

Hello everyone,

First time on here and desparately searching for answers to issues with my 2006 F150. It has 70,600 miles and has the 5.4L V8. 2 times in the last month the orange wrench light has come on while driving down the road. The truck did not shut off but was severely underpowered on both occasions. Both times I pulled over and shut the truck off and then restarted the truck and it seemed to run fine after that. Preliminary research shows that more than likely this could be a throttle body issue of some kind. I also see there is a TSB out there (8-18-2) indicating that an upgrade is available to compensate for sludge and carbon build up in the throttle body. The other symptom the truck has is when it is under a load, say at 4,000 RPM the truck struggles and sputters and it is not smooth accelaration when under that load. It does not throw any codes when under a diagnostic test. I am trying to figure out exactly what is wrong and the best way to fix it. The dealership wants $500 to replace the throttle body but I am unsure if all components on the throttle body are bad, etc. Maybe it is the motor, TPS, injector, or combo of all components. Just guessing at this point. The cost for the throttle body part alone is between $250 - $300 or more. It appears that replacing the throttle body is not very difficult but I obviously do not have the tuner to reflash the computer with the needed upgrade and I assume the upgrade is intended to keep the new throttle body from going bad??? Any thoughts, assistance, suggestions, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Matt
