I talked to one of the Ford designers of the 5.4L 3V engine at SEMA last week. He said that the cam phaser noise when the engine is hot is due to pulsations of oil pressure. He said that they have released a new P/N cam phaser solenoid, that has a oil check valve to keep the solenoid from reacting to pulsations of oil pressure. He said this eliminates the cam phaser noise.

I've often said if you have been using a MotorCraft FL -820-S Filter & a quality 5W-20 oil from the beginning this problem is a rare! My truck is silent at 43K miles!

This past weekend i did a complete timing component change out. Phasers, chains, tensioners, guides, vct solenoids, and few other items while i was in there. Two chain guides were broke and causing excessive slap. A seal on one of the tensioners was also blown out. This thing is really quite now. Took two days

If you don't mind me asking, how much $ was it to do all of that? How many miles do you have on the truck? I am at 173,000 on mine right now. Mine really does sound like a 7.3 powerstroke and I don't know what work was done to mine before I bought it. I have owned it since 134,000 miles.

2008 f150

Hi, Im not sure Im jumping into this thread the right way, but 3 weeks ago I traded my 2000 F150 in on a 2008 F150. This 08 is really clean, I was super impressed with how it ran on a long test drive, but the first week I had it I pulled my boat to the lake with it for the first time, and upon arriving at the lake and slowing down to back the trailer in this truck started knocking and dieseling, and sounded horrible! It lasted a few secs and came out of it. Everything fine after that, 2 weeks later , pulled the boat again, same thing... so I come home and do a google search, and come up with this cam phaser issue. My truck doesnt sound like a diesel all the time, it runs smooth and has a very slight tick, not even noticeable in the truck, only twice in 3 weeks has this occurred both times very briefly. Im just worried at this point that I havent even made the first payment on this truck and it could have a potentially serious issue? The truck has 132760 miles on it, I do not know at this moment what oil filter is on it or what oil is being used. I would sure appreciate any insight on this.
