Mobil 1 is fine, as long as it's the "EP" and it's 5W20.

What is "EP"? what is MC blend oil? Does the motorcraft filter allow more oil to pass thru versus other filters? I run 5 20w oil and I have a Napa filter on there now.

I thought the hardest part of the job was taking the right valve cover off. The front cover is pretty straight forward just get the ac compressor out of the way. I didn't really look the cams over because I assumed they were ok. There was no discoloration or anything obvious going on with them and the engine was surprisingly clean. Since I have owned the truck I have used Motorcraft or Pennzoil and always a motorcraft filter.

EP is Mobil 1 extended performance. MC blend is the motorcraft synthetic blend oil.

If you use a Napa filter, only use the Gold. That's a premium Wix filter. The cheaper ones aren't very good.

Well I think I will switch to the motorcraft filter. I would like to get going on the phaser issue....although they will probably be fine, just have to put up with the diesel sound. I want to keep the truck around for a long time and not damage the motor. I was looking throught the shop manual about removing the cams. I know you have to keep the caps in order so they are installed in the same location. I believe (from what i read) that you have to move the the key on the damper to the one o'clock position, then to the seven o'clock position. This is done so that the valves will not hit the pistons, correct? Are the retainers on the springs the ones that keeps the valves in place?

My truck has ran penzoil and mc filters its whole life. My truck sounded nearly like a diesel and at around 800 rpm in park it had a bad clicking/smacking type sound.

at around 50,000 I replaced both cam phasers. I did the work myself, it took about 3 weekends with myself and father working on the truck. I would say we are both fairly good mechanics. When I pulled the passenger side cam phasor out it pretty much fell apart. If I remember correctly it has pins that hold it together and these had all been sheared off. I believe I could have left it and it would have been fine, it is all held together by force inside. When I had it apart the inside of the engine looked immaculate, no sludge build up anywhere or problem signs. Replaced it and with nearly 10,000 more miles on it no more diesel click.

Now my truck has moved onto an extreme exhaust leak.

I have had this notorious ticking sound for awhile. When its cold at morning start up there is no noise until it gets warm. I have no power loss or anything and the truck has been great to me for years. Right now I have 117,000 miles on it, I ran Mobile1 around 20,000 miles and switched to Amsoil 5w-20 with amsoil filter at around 30,000, no theory behind it just a personal preference. Does anyone know if the phasers are new and improved if i replace mine or am I putting the same junk back in. What fails on these, is it the return spring? Just wondering...

Supposedly, the phasors you purchase now are a new model than what was put on the 04-05 truck. Usually the pins that hold the two pieces on either side of the spring shear off from what I hear and personal experience.

I hope my motor lasts a good while, I have had a tick on the motor since about 50k, right now Im at 152k and still runs good, always used motorcraft 5-20 and motorcraft filter until my last 2 oil changes, we use Amsoil on our fleet truck and Napa platinum filters...so I decided to switch since I put alot of miles on the truck as of this last year and an oil change every month was a beating, now on the Amsoil i can go 2 months!!

Sometimes I really wish my 79 F150 was up and running, no computers, cam phasers, just the smell of fuel out the exhaust and no cats!!! and some serious stump pulling torque.

I woulder if a remanned long block from Ford would be the way to go if the motor craps out??

3V 5.4s love 5w20 and a purolator/motorcraft oil filter. Other than that I'm not sure.

Correction - I don't think oil weight has much to do with it. All vehicles that spec 5w20 is for CAFE laws and gas mileage claims. The same motors in the united states that spec 5w20 spec 30w in other countries. I'm not going to beat a dead horse, it's been covered many times
