Let the truck sit a bit.

Put a drain pan under there and just remove the filter, let whatever is left up top drain, clean up the seating surface - most of the oil is going to be in the oil pan.

Put on a MC FL820-S

Top up with fresh oil. Change both at the next interval, what ever that is for you.

Now - if yer **** ( and frankly total cost for both MC oil & filter is LESS than a case o' bownpops up here ), you'd change it all - ya never know if that Orange Can o' Death was already self-destructing

Yer truck - yer call.

The only oil you lose when removing just the filter is the oil that's in the filter.

They changed the size of the FL820S a few years ago. Either one will work.

Before topping off the oil, start it and run it for 30 seconds to fill up the filter, then let it drain down for a few minutes before checking it. If it's between the marks, no need to add.

So far so good, but today when I got in my truck to drive home I heard a louder than normal knock and tick. I left her running and popped the hood, it was comibg from the passenger side top front ( cam phaser). ..and boy could you hear it...then I jiggled some wires on the timing plug harness and it stopped imeaditly....I'm pretty sure juggling the wires had absoutly nothing to do with it but I figured I'd post anyways. So was part of the phaser stuck for the first 45 seconds or so?? Any thoughts

My 2008 f150 5.4 started out wioth cam phaser issue i chasnged them and the timing tensioner and the vct solonoids. truck ran great cold but when it got to its running temp it acted up again !!! Most likely it could be a bad sensor which the wire is connected too! try replcing that first 8mm bolt holds it in .

Just and fyi. Only use MC oil and filter and still have the tick with only 53k! Cant beat the price of the local dealership. 19.99 for oil change and tire rotation.

If it's just a light ticking noise seemingly coming from the top of the engine, that is the injectors opening and closing.

Recently purchased my 04', after putting about 30 miles on it, I noticed the diesel sound and a clacking knock at idle to 1200rpm. Safe to say I was a little disappointed. A little research later, now im ordering plugs, phasers, solenoids, and timing chain kit. Hopefully after the work AMSOIL 5w-20 and wix filters will help prolong the life of the new units.

Also, there is a spark knock when taking off from a dead stop, I am hoping this is due to the phaser and timing issues it may be having.

The engine sounds bran new for about 10 minutes until it reaches max operating temp exactly. Truck has 139k on it.

My 2005 5.4 with 115,000 miles has the cold start knock real bad. Along with what I am assuming is injector and cam phaser noises. It is very noticeable at drive thrus and when close to buildings. People ask me all the time why it sounds like a diesel.

Truck has had only Mobil1 or MC 5W20 and FL-820S since I bought it at 30,000 miles.

Here is a short video. What say you?

Exactly how common is the cam phaser problem? I'm looking at buying an earlier model year F150 (2004, 2005...) and most of those are getting higher in mileage. If I find one that doesn't have the problem now, what are my chances at getting the issue?

I've tried Googling and read a lot of threads but not really found anything definitive as far how many F150s this actually happened to.

I got my truck as a lease return, and every single 5.4 3V I have ever heard is louder than mine. Although I have a audible tick, tick, tick, tick at idle... It is nowhere near a knock,

I know there are a lot of drama queens out there that want to fuss and whine about every little noise cars make so I used to wonder about those that said their 5.4 sounded like a diesel until I heard it for myself... There was an '06 that pulled up at the gas pumps by me recently while I was filling up and it sounded exactly like a diesel... Rattling and clacking putting up all sorts of noise...

With that said, I seriously doubt I have anything to worry about with my phasers at this point...
