PTM Mirror caps
PTM Mirror caps
...Yes, with pics
I originally had black power mirrors with black caps

but I wanted the PTM look after reading up on the project here. So I bought rattle cans of the grey primer, clearcoat and the DSG paint from AutoZone. I did this project last spring so brand names/exact titles escape me, but I'll get those the next time I drop in AZ and update this thread.
I started by removing the mirror backs off of the housing, first removing the mirror glass from the rotating ball joint and making sure to not bust the metal clips that hold the mirror in place.
Once I had done that, I masked off the bottom of the mirror backs with green tape, in preparation for the grey primer.

Following directions from another thread here, I sanded the mirror caps with 3 levels of sandpaper of varying grits (starting with 120 grit and finishing with 320 grit), washing with warm soapy water in between levels. This gives you a smooth surface to apply the primer coats to, something that will adhere best for the painting to come.
After two coats of primer, your caps should look similar to this

Though this picture looks a little darker than DSG, everything worked out in the end. I believe my friend and I applied 4 coats of the paint to the mirror caps, letting each coat set up for 45 mins to 1 hour before applying a fresh coat.

Once I was satisfied with the composition of the paint in relation to my truck, it was time to spray clear over the paint. Once again, we applied 4 coats of clear over the paint, once again letting each coat set up roughly 45 mins before applying another coat.
Test pic to see how close we matched paints up...

And here was the finished product...pretty happy with it.

Finally, the new caps reapplied...

Hope you enjoyed, know this thread has been done before, but I just wanted to show off what 7 hours or so of work will pay off with

Thanks, MTM.
I painted mine around April/May of last year, and they are still holding up very well. I think it would add to your truck, as most of the '04-'08 FX trucks I see have the painted caps.

If I get industrious one of these days, I'll do that, too. I like the look of those turn signals.

I've seen them painted like that, and they look cheap. Painting just the caps gives it the appearance of an accent, while the black on the bottom retains a look of strength. Plus, less to worry about keeping clean
