high mileage common problems?
I have 98,000 on mine and have had all the dreaded 5.4 problems. Injector went bad had to be replaced, got it done for $300, plugs changed 4 broke paid $200 to have it done, now I have the dreaded passenger manifold leak. I have the parts just have to get my mechanic to change it out.
The good thing is he takes it easy on me for the labor.
He laughs at my truck because he says anything that goes wrong with these engines I have had it!
I am still keeping the truck, I have one more year to pay on it and then I will totally overhaul it-new suspension lift, new tires, rims, exhaust and extras to make it a new to me truck and drive it until the wheels fall off! I am over truck payments, I would rather pay for repairs!!!!

05 Lariat vs 2010 Lariat
Biggest difference is in the captains chairs, 2010 way more comfortable. Love the Nav and back up camera, stereo is way better, went with the 6.5 box in the 2010 seemed like a good idea but that extra foot makes it a little trickier for city driving and the turning radius is a lot bigger. Love satelite radio as well.
20 inch tires vs 18 on the 05. Horn seems kind of Lame on the 2010. Paint on 05 seems nicer than all of the orange peel effect that came on the 2010. FS

Update and epilogue i suppose:
I caved in a bit and just bought a 2012 ecoboost to replace my '05.
I didnt look at the '05 as a ticking time bomb or anything, but at 170k, its right at the point i would expect to start having some issues ----
If i used it locally in my area 95% of the time, i would just keep it going until i experienced failure and let AAA take me home, --- but i travel extensively so the thought of being stranded at 11pm in a strange town because of something odd occurring was not appealing
-- hoping i can sell it to a worthy high school kid or just anybody who needs a decent knockin' around truck who is not planning to drive to Forida twice a year or anything
Now -- i have to detail the poor thing, and it has been a while since it has even been vacuumed out, much less scrubbed down and given the q-tip treatment --- this may take a while

Good points.....what if you were to set aside a new car payment would run you each month into a separate account and just keep doing it until one of two things happen.
1) After each major repair use the money in this separate account to cover the cost until the account becomes dry, then sell.
2) If no major repairs occur then when the account gets up to 10k or so use it for a down on a new one to keep your future payments lower.
If it has been fairly trouble free I would still be inclined to hold onto it a bit longer.

The wrap-around design reminds me of the pre-2004 (also ugly) but less bubbly. My wife liked the extra 6" in the cab, but I got more truck for less $ going with the '08. The chrome is definitely overkill on the new ones.
