solutions and problems

So sorry I havent been on the site in forever!! like months or year. I've been on a few times as a guest but have not posted anything.

so here is my solution to dirty truck

now my problem:

I have not been daily driving my truck much so I put the edge programmer on level 3 so I could get more performance when I did drive it.

Since then, there has been a weird shudder coming from the transmission at about 55mph. I searched other posts here and found a good description of this feeling. Another post said it was like sudden small speed bumps in the road. This worries me because transmission work is very expensive. The posts I found are very confusing because they go in so many different directions and some go back to 2008.

My truck is a:
2005 fx4
5.4
95,000 miles
35 inch tires
no longer daily driven as of september 2010

What gears are you running and hopefully you're using 91-93 octane gas with level 3.....

Have you updated your Edge at all? I remember there was a version that caused/exacerbated the tranny shudder. An update could fix the issue. Reset to stock programming, disconnect the battery for 10mins or so to clear the PCM and try running your truck to see if the Edge is your issue.

Good luck.

Like said above, you are using high test? Have you tried another tune level?

I'm guessing that the transmission has been serviced in that 95K miles? High miles on the fluid will often lead to TC shudder and the cure .... if that's the case .... is a fluid change and new filter.

My first guess would be a misfire if those are the original plugs. Mine had the same little 'kick' under load at highway speeds that went away when I changed the plugs. Alot cheaper than trans work!

X2 on the plugs. Right before I changed mine I could have sworn it was a transmission problem. New plugs and my truck ran good as new. 100k miles is about the time they start going out.

Thanks y'all!!
No update in about a year and a half. The last one I did caused some issues.
I always kept my programmer on the tow setting without a problem.
I always run 93 octane

Transmission was serviced at the correct 70k mile interval by ford

Never have had the plugs done but I need to, I know. I received the warantee extension a long time ago.
I've had one injector go bad and replaced by ford as well

I bet it's the plugs. Also, you do recalibrate for the taller tires, right?

It seems to be a toss up. The plugs or programmer.

The truck is calibrated for the tires.

I've only noticed the issue since I put the truck on level 3.

I have a 6" fabtech lift on my truck. I was wondering if it could be the driveshaft. I have not had it serviced and It did come with a spacer for the lift but I was wondering if I get it serviced should I get it lengthend? It seems kinda short even with the spacer installed.

I'm glad I found this post. I have. 2006 150 super crew with 72000 miles on it. Been running the edge evo for a year on the tow setting. Just switched it to the 3rd setting with 93 octane and now at 55 I get a bounce to. Almost like bumps in the road or flat spots on the tires. I'm running magna flow and 33 trail graps with a level. But it only started after the program change. Never updated it because of horror stories. But how would a constant cruise at 55 with very little load cause a bounce from the trans? 50 is fine and everything after 60. Truck runs smooth and trans was flushed like 15k ago.

most likely the settings that are adjustable are not in agreement with the speeds and such that you need to shift at. i was playing around with my gryphon and induced this same thing by moving the settings for shifting too low and the settings for downshifting to high. they didn't get along and my tranny acted like that. just a thought.

this was only in lvl 3 also

coldbore556------ thats the exact same symptoms and conditions mine is having!! the only thing I changed is the shift firmness and I only gradually increase the settings over the course of weeks and weeks.

the other setting I messed with was getting the speedometer set right. It was a pain in the butt!!
I have the edge displaying my speed, I have my speedometer in my dash showing my speed, and I have a GPS unit displaying my speed as well. Trying to get all 3 to agree was a chore.

the number I found to finally make all 3 units agree was 2707mm. MY edge and GPS are exactly syncronized and my dash speedo is almost exact---only like 1-2 mph difference. Good enough.

Same for me, the towing setting always and now that I switched to level 3, I get issues. Hmmmmm.....

on a side note: according to my mpg's displayed by the edge, I am getting better mileage on the level 3 setting. 13.5 in the city and almost 16 hwy. not bad considering EPA sticker was 14 and 18

thanks for your feedback

Back when I had a edge I had the same problem. It was the tunes and not the truck in my case. I'm on SCT now from JDM and I could not be happier.
