back up sensor issue

I noticed today when backing my truck into a parking spot at work that the backup sensors didnt go off and for some reason OFF was lit up on the button but I didnt turn them off and couldnt make them turn on again.

Same thing happened at the gym tonight.

Both times I tried backing up after leaving the truck parked and the sensors worked fine.

What could be the issue? I didnt notice anything obvious and the sensors worked fine yesterday.

It has been raining a bit around here although it was dry this afternoon. Im hoping its nothing too serious and expensive.

Have you checked the harness and connectors to the sensors?

I have had the opposite problem with mine during the winter months. They start to "scream" as soon as I put the truck in reverse, even though I am no where near anything. This only happens after I have driven the truck through a car wash that has the "bottom blast". Usually once things dry out in a day or so, they go back to normal. See what happens once things dry out in your area.

Today on the way to work the OFF light stayed lit up the whole time.
When I started the truck after work the light was off but I didnt get close enough to anything backing up to see if the sensors worked.

Ive never taken any vehicle Ive owned thru a car wash so thats not it. I usually wash it at a do it yourself deal but even thats been a few weeks.

They stopped working again. Yesterday I cleaned the terminal of the connectors (didnt look corroded at all) and used electrical grease on them. While taking one sensor out the bumper it came apart in two pieces and looked kind of funny inside and had a broken wire so I went to the dealer and bought another sensor for the wonderful price of $140 (with tax) and put it in. I put the truck in reverse and it started beeping due to my dad's car being behind the truck.

I figured it was working fine. Then later on when driving it about a mile the OFF light on the switch came on again and stayed on and now the sensors havent worked since.

Im thinking my best bet is to drop it off at a local Ford dealer at this point but Im still curious as to what the deal is.
