Completely off-topic but I think the next step is screwing that loose wiper cowl down. Here is the thread I used to fix mine, for about two dollars and 5 mins worth of trouble.

Back on topic, that Gotts setup looks nice. I did the "original" GM on my '08 and it seemed to pep that 4.6 right on up.

Just finished this version of the gotts mod. Thanks for the write-up, I was going to do the version with the ABS pipe and the sanding until I saw this. Aside from wrestling the snorkel from the rest of the intake assembly, this was a snap, and worth spending the few extra bucks over the home depot version.

Took longer to pry the OEM bellows off the intake plennum than it did to install the new Spectr hose and fittings. 15 minutes total time to do it unless you do what I did in next paragraph. Well worth the 20 bucks at Auto Zone. The Spectr fitting fits the fender wall cutout better than the OEM fitting did. You listening Ford?
One added thing I did was to take the trusty old dremmel and grind off the two humps inside the air plennum inlet to create a smooth mounting surface for the collar to sit on and I cut 4 slits at 90 degree intevals so the hose clamp would squeeze the intake plenum onto the new Spectr fitting nice and tight.
Also noticed that someone had drilled a bunch of holes (12 total) in bottom of air plenum. WTF ??? That was letting a ton of hot engine compartment air in when engine is warmed up.... Plugged them bad boys up before re-installing plennum. Was 11 degrees here yesterday, so can't tell if anything changed, but will be watching pretty closely and will report if anything bad happens.

I plan on picking this up at autozone and giving it a try. How many pieces from the original intake am I taking out? I really haven't looked under the hood but was just wondering what I'm removing and up to what point on the housing to stop?
Spectre installed
Went the local Auto Zone and asked about the Spectre tube.
The manager asked if I'd take the chrome one? He just wanted to get it out of stock. He noticed my Air Force veteran plates on my truck and
he said since you are a vet I'll give it to you for $10!!!

Sorry to bring back from the dead but this was an excellent read and something I'll be doing ASAP (about to go pickup mine from Advanced Auto at lunch). I was looking around at intakes but can't justify dropped $200-300 for something I can do for $20. Thanks.
Not to pooh pooh this, and yes it has got to be an improvement over stock, but I see an issue with this that folks might not have considered. The impact of the ridged flex line on air flow...
Consider air flowing through an enclosed / confined space to be much like cars on a highway. When that highway is smooth, and straight, and with no cops or wrecks everyone is moving nice and fast. But put tight turns in the mix (sharp bends in hose), or make the road surface a deep washboard (ridged hose) and the vehicles (air) travelling over the rough, tight turned surface have to slow down to avoid being utterly shaken to death, and in turn the folks in the straighter smoother lanes slow down to rubberneck. Air flow does similar things.
While the theory and application are well documented in other applications, where I came across it is in woodworking dust collection design, the theory is solid and based on established science. It is a long drawn out, scientific / engineering read, but if you can choke through it, Bill Pentz has an excellent write up on the whole issue from the perspective of moving air, in his case, dirty dust laden air into a filtration media. Sound familiar?

The 3" S&D pipe trick is a pretty decent one, although the stock tube with the baffles and bends is unduly restricitve, the biggest restriction is where the tube necks down to go through the fender... The smooth wall of the 3" S&D will allow the air to flow smoother...
To avoid excess turbulence smoothing / rounding the inside edge of that tube should be done. I didn't, and I don't think anyone does...
I do NOT recommend PVC pipe for this project. I tried it, and it was a miserable failure...

The Gotts mod did not make a difference at all for normal driving. It did give me a little more on the top end but I generally don't drive down the road running the engine at 5 grand.

I would like to remind those considering the Gotts intake mod to use ABS, or even the Spectre tube. I am not sure if the segment of PVC I used was bad or not, but with the long crack it developed I was concerned it would fragment and have something pass the filter and cause all sorts of havoc...
