Repair Advice

Ive had a rough 6 months with my 05 F150 5.4L. 115K miles.

6 months ago (5,000 miles) I had a very loud ticking noise on the passenger side. Took it to the Ford dealer and they replaced all the lifters on that side. They said it was a collapsed lifter. $600

1 month ago the truck began jerking when going up hill, light load, 45-50 mph. Replaced 3 COPS and 3 spark plugs. $500

Now, I have another loud ticking on the passenger side. Back to Ford again. Now they are telling me that the followers have flat spots and have gouged into the cam shaft. Recommend a whole new engine $5700.

It seems suspicious to me that after less than 6 months I have problems on the same side of the engine that they worked on, parts they had to take off to get to the lifters, etc.

Anybody else had similar issues? Is a new engine the right choice? Otherwise it is $1800 just to fix this side.

The rockers/followers must have been pulled when they replaced the adjusters. They should have noticed any flat spotting and/or unusual wear to the rockers and/or cam lobes then. I could see a single rocker failing between then and now just due to luck of the draw but IMO it would be very unsual to have that much NEW wear in just 5,000 miles across multiple rockers unless there was some other problem (oil supply, poor reassembly, etc.).

Personally, I'd want an answer to why they didn't recommend replacing the rockers while they were in there the first time if they were that worn. If things looked fine when they did the adjusters, then I'd want some explanation for that much wear in that short of time. No point in putting in a new cam and all if it's just going to do the same in another 5K.
