Transmission and Possible Suspension Issues (Help Please?)

Hello everyone,

First let me start by saying that the truck I own is a 2007 F-150 Lariat 4x4. (5.4L) It has 68000 miles on it, and ever since I bought it, has run like a champ.

Today, I drove it just like I always do, but as I'm leaving work I notice that it's still in four wheel drive, as I had put it in 4 wheel drive a few hours earlier and drove around in it just fine. After I turned the **** to put it back into 2wd I noticed that the light went away, and I could feel the truck trying to pull it's way forward. Put it back into 4wd and back into 2wd a few more times, and no change. Then I start really driving.

The truck didn't initially go into gear as soon as I put it in drive. and ended up revving to 2500 RPM's, and jumping into gear. (Still in 4wd) Got up to 40 MPH, and noticed that the truck was running close to 3500 RPM's and making a strange clicking noise. (I still don't have a clue what that is) I drove the rest of the way home at 40 MPH. I tried throwing it into neutral and back into drive, a few times, and not much really happened. I tried turning off the O/D, and all it did was drop a gear and shoot up to 4750 RPM's.

So, right now I'm at a loss, I've looked at the transmission housing, and everything looks ok, the driveshaft looks fine.

Any ideas? I'm really hoping that the transmission isn't slipping for no reason. Any help you can offer is great.

Any chance that there's been a malfunction and it's really in 4WD-LO which would double RPMs?

Also, it's never a good idea to drive in either 4WD-LO or 4WD-HI unless on slick surfaces. It should not be done on wet or dry pavement or concrete, not even just a little. It should be avoided if possible.

I had thought of this. It just seems weird to me that it would get stuck in it, like it did.

I know it's not good to drive on drive pavement in 4wd, and I wasn't originally. The only reason I had it in 4wd was the fact that I was on mud, movin equipment. It was in Lo, because I didn't realize that Hi was first on my selector. Lesson learned.

I feel like a royal DB. After crawling around under the truck for almost an hour on Friday, and driving around my backyard for about 20 minutes, I came to a conclusion; there is no tranny problem, and it was the 4wd that was the issue.

After sitting in the drivers seat, contemplating for a while, (40+ minutes) I remembered that if I put the truck in neutral, and flipped the **** to 2HI, from 4LO, that it would go back into 2wd. Sure enough...and everything is good to go.

2 days of worrying, and racking my brain and it was a simple combination that fixed my issue.

Thumbs up

Yeah, stuff happens like that sometimes.

Yesterday I was working on the bike and was looking for two nuts in my SS nut / screw box to fit two 1/4" socket head SS screws. I found two SS nyloc nuts and washers, then spent 10 minutes looking all over my shop around the bike and on the floor for the screws I just knew I laid down .... before realizing they were two screws tucked in my left palm with allen and 7/16 wrenchs.

I was holding and feeling the wrenches, plumb forgot the screws were there.

On the '07 when going from soft ground / snow to hard surface, if I had it in 4wd HI .... I slip trans in neutral and then shift **** into 2wd. If going from 4wd LO back to 4wd HI or to 2wd ... I stop, put truck in neutral, turn ****, then listen for change and often even let truck roll backwards a hair.

On my '77 I always stop, put truck in Park, then shift lever of 205 from 4wd LO to HI range or 2wd HI.
In snow, etc .... if shifting from 4wd HI to 2wd HI like when running out of snow, I slip trans in neutral as I roll and shift while still on the snow before hitting hard pavement.
