sluggish 2004 5.4l

i have a 2004 lariat supercrew with a 5.4 and stock everything. i had to replace the engine in april with a reman and it runs fine but doesnt have much power. from a dead stop i can push it to the floor and it just starts rolling. doesnt really have a "passing gear " at any speed either. struggled to pull my 18" bass boat this weekend in o.d... tried it in drive and it seemed to be getting horrible gas mileage according to the factory fuel calculator gauge. like 8 or 9 mpg.. it got about 11mpg in o.d. and got about 15.5 without boat on hiway.. i dont know if it could be a cat or exhaust issue , fuel, air or what.. i traded my 98 chevy with a 350 in to get this ford. the chevy had no issues pulling the boat in o.d and got about 11 to 12 mpg and i could smoke the tires if i wanted to with that thing.. i love this truck but i think my 1994 ranger with a 4cyl could out run and out pull it. any ideas on where to start?????

a few weeks ago i had an issue and the light came on and it was running rough. i scanned it and it had a coil code show up. took it back in to the guy that installed engine and they replaced one coil. fixed the rough running and light went off.. runs smooth now , just gutless!!! havent scanned it in last couple weeeks but the lack of power i believe is not a recent development. it wasnt overpowered before engine swap, i was hoping the fresh engine would perk it up but the power hasnt shown up.. it was burning alot of oil before the engine swap.. 5 qts in 3k miles.

Running on a bad coil can cause your converters to self-destruct. Excess unburned fuel overheats the converters. It's very possible that this is your problem.

A low-tech way to find out if this is the problem is to remove the front oxygen sensors. If there is a noticable improvement in power, you've find the problem.

If you were burning that much oil with the old motor and still have the same cats, that is where I would look too. As mentioned above the misfire is hard on cats and the oil burn will just make it worse.

Take it to a good muffler shop and have them check the temp on the cats. Or take it out at night and run it a tad hard. When you stop take a look under the truck, if the cats are glowing red then you found the problem.

thanks guys. if i had to guess i would say its the cats.. there is no telling how long it had been burning oil. i got it in january of 2010. thats probably why the previous owners traded it in for a new truck. i think it burned oil at the time i got it..

You can get a set of Magnaflow converters for cheaper. Is yours 2WD or 4WD?

Yea, they're not cheap. $1083.17 with 5% off code MF5 for the both sides

Still cheaper than the dealer.

Magnaflow cats are $70 a set universal....... Don't listen to this direct fit parts suggestions, stop by the Exhaust and Intake section and we will steer you into the correct direction..
