FX4 suspicion

Hey all, seeking a little help. I bought a truck from a local used dealer back in November, and I'm a little suspicious about what trim package it actually is. According to the VIN, it is in fact an FX4, but it also has a 4.6L. All the other FX4s I can find are 5.4Ls. I also expected to find the 9.75" rear, but it's the 8.8. The 4WD was screwed up when I bought it, but the dealer righted that wrong. If I paid for an FX4 but didn't get it, that's a much bigger deal. Has anyone else ever heard of a 4.6L FX4?

What year is the truck? I have a 2005, and I have a copy of the 2005 Ford brocure, and from what I can see the 4.6 was not an option for the FX4. I am pretty sure a Ford dealer can run the VIN and tell exactly what the vehicle came with from the factory. Thats probably your best bet, take it to a Ford dealership and have them pull up the VIN.

I have the original brochure from ordering my new 2004 F150 FX4. It states the 5.4 was standard. The 4.6 wasn't even optional for the FX4. Hope this helps.

Run the VIN through this site. It may give you a link to the original window sticker.

It is an 04. I don't have access to the VIN right now at work, but I'll run it through that site and post results.

Well, this is interesting. Turns out the truck is not an FX4, but an XLT with the FX4 decal on the side. It definitely has a 4.6L, it definitely has an 8.8" rear differential (not a 9.75" like the actual FX4), and it definitely does NOT have any skidplates. Looking at the sales papers, the dealer really did advertise it as an FX4, and the printed sales price shows that I paid $2,000 more for the supposed upgraded package as compared to the 2004 XLT with similar miles that was on the same lot at the time of purchase. Looks like I might be getting a new truck.

When I was looking for my truck, the dealer told me that only 5.4's came in fx4's. It wasn't even an option to get the 4.6 in it.(which is fine, i like my 5.4) Along with the rear end. An FX4 has a 9.75 LS in it. not the 8.8.
Just thought I would let you know what I was told back in December of 2010.

Keep us posted on what the dealer does for you. I'm interested to know.
Good luck!!

does the truck even have painted bumpers, unpainted plastic fender flares, fx4 in the gauge cluster, etc?

if not you are partially to blame for not doing basic research and just jumping into the truck because you liked it.

how long ago did you buy it? chances are the dealer is going to tell you to get lost.

Hmm, not sure how I'd go about this one man. Kill 'em with kindness first and see if they'll make it right because it's obvious you paid for something you didn't get.

If that doesn't work, I would try a corporate office first before threatening legal action, even though it was used it was still bought from xxxx dealership.

One way or another, I'd be looking for something in return be it a ridiculous warranty and all scheduled maintenance, a refund of the value difference between an FX4 and an XLT, or another truck.

Good luck man.

All in all, the dealer seems to be a stand-up guy. I think it was an honest mistake. A day after buying the truck, I found out the 4WD was busted, turned out to be a gutted IWE, and they fixed it for free, no questions asked. Shortly thereafter, the transfer case puked, and they also fixed that for free. They're located in a small town, so I think word of mouth advertising is the primary way of advertisement, so they really want to protect their reputation.

Yeah, I guess it is partially my fault for not knowing what specifically an FX4 comes equipped with. I don't profess to be a gearhead or a truck enthusiast. I just appreciate having off-road capability, and this one was a good deal. The truck doesn't have any of the features ol' whats his name mentioned, and I didn't "research" it, but we have retail laws to protect retards like myself from getting ripped off. They may very well tell me to get lost, but that doesn't mean I will. Reasonably, I might hold partial responsibility. Legally, I think it's all on the dealer. The Bill of Sale, Retail Installment Contract, and GAP Addendum all list the truck as being a true FX4, and the entire time I was considering it, they said it was. Had I known it wasn't, I wouldn't have forked over the extra couple K for it.

Ideally, I'd love for him to just apply the difference to my current obligation. I like the truck, trust the 4.6, and I really don't do any hardcore off-roading, so I don't actually need the extra features. Realistically, I don't think they'll want to give up liquid assets. They have a comparable truck on the lot right now, and I bet they'd rather do a trade, which would be unfavorable because although it's a year newer, that truck has 94,000 miles as opposed to my 79,000. End all is going to court. I'm not afraid of it. In fact, I work in a courtroom every day, and I see it all the time.

Thanks for the well-wishes. I'm going to give them a call when they open this morning and I'll post results.

Small town or not, I would have asked for the car fax, or gone on line armed with the VIN number and paid for it myself. That would have given you all the info, service records, and any accidents this truck may have had. Hope it works out.

I did. It's clean, just not an FX4.

By the way, I called, and the owner isn't in today. I left a message and he's supposed to call me back. In the meantime, the salesman I dealt with while purchasing the truck has since been fired. One more bullet in my gun.

Here is a thread with a link to the 2004 F150 brochure
https://www.f150online.com/forums/20...ing-guide.html

as already stated here, the 4.6 is not available for the FX4.

The dealer should have known this. You should not be expected to know this when you buy from a dealer. If you were buying from some guy on the street, perhaps you should research more.... if you are buying from a Ford dealer they should know EXACTLY what they are selling you.

good luck!

There is an "Ez-credit" "We Finace" dealer in my area that takes wrecked vehicles and sells them. They sell regular 4x4 Tahoes slap a Z-71 sticker on and hike the price up $4-5,000 its ridiculous. The dealer should of known what they were selling, and not just say "Oh its an FX4, see it has a sticker". Hope you can work something out.
