My 04 did the same thing about 2 years ago and i just added a can of Sea foam and after I ran out that tank of fuel I changed the fuel filter and I havent had the problem since. I know some people around here dont like the Sea foam idea but it worked for me. Might save you some $$ to try this but it also sounds like it is time to change the plugs anyway.

My dad reported a flashing check engine light at one point but I couldn't get it to flash.

He got the truck back today after they ran a diagnostic test and reported a misfire on 2 cylinders. They put in a new cap and apparently all is well. They said it's not due for plug replacements for another 10k miles.

He's a happy camper.

Seafoam=naptha+kerosene+rubbing alcohol.

Use techron instead.....hopefully you changed oil afterwards....

Just an FYI: A flashing check engine light indicates the engine is currently misfiring.

I assume by cap, you mean coil since the truck doesn't have a cap.

And regarding the plugs, the sooner they're done, the less chance it will be an expensive job. The original plug design is notorious for sticking in the engine and snapping in half when trying to remove them.

Yeah I meant coils, not cap. Ultimately the problem never went away and the CEL came on again. A quick scan showed an oxygen sensor issue. The stuttering never went away, either. So the dealership replaced all the plugs and coils and it's running better. We went on a 700 mile trip on Saturday and it ran great.
