dented tailgate

my wife and i were siting on my tailgate, as we did a million times in my old truck, looking at the lake while camping enjoying a brew . next day i put up my tailgate to find two dimples left and right of the ford badge . it appears the tailgate must have rested against the bumper. has anyone else experienced this issue. surely the gate should be able to hold 400lbs.

Are you sure its not from someone placing their hands next to the emblem when slamming the tail gate shut? That will leave dents really quick.

As long as your cables aren't stretched it should be more than capable of holding 400 lbs. I've had over 1000 lbs on mine before with no problems.

what is the combined weight of you and your wife? Could have met capacity and warped the metal.

Also might want to check the frame for damage........

Were y'all sitting still looking at the lake ..... or "moving" a lot?

Need pics if we are to help. I know my old '77 will still take more than 400 pounds, it's still got it's OE FORD tailgate. I am fairly certain my '07 will as well. As long as the cables ain't broke, don't rightly see howit could hit the bumper.

There wasn't something setting on the bumper when you let it down was there? I've driven my snowmobiles/quads up into the bed of my truck with ramps numerous times, putting far more then 400lbs of 'load' al-beit moving load on it, and the only dent in my tailgate is from a Ford Service 'tech' pushing on it with greasey hands when my truck broke down on me...Nice.

I was just joking around, hope no one takes offense.

And about the tailgate, there are 2 cables there. If they are intact, tailgate should never hit the bumper.

I would think it happened by some other means, nonetheless PDR it.

i've tried to photo the ding but they're small enough i just can't really get them to show up, in fact at first glance i can't even see them, but i know where they are and find them. they line up perfectly with the corner where the bumper cuts in for the licence plate. my best guess is maybe my bumper is slighty turned up enough to touch. i just bought the truck a couple of months ago so maybe it's aftermarket replacement of something less than perfect. thanks for all the feedback.

to answer some questions. hawkz28, tim98 roflmao no offence taken just a goos laugh. tbear depending on what you mean, most "movin" was saved for the tent, but we certainly wiggled, got on and off the gate over the period of the eavening, we had to refill or cups now and then. so we were unlikely sitting still how ever we were not using it as a trampoline either. again thank for all feedback

I think I know what you are talking about, but mine are a bit above the tailgate emblem.

You can not seem them unless you get really close, and its almost imposable to feel them.

I have them on my 2006.
My friends 2005 has them in the same spot.
I have seen a 2007 with them as well.
All different colors and body configs and trim levels as well.

Them seem to almost perfectly line up with tow hooks, as if the tale gate had been dropped and hit the tow hooks of the truck behind it.

you know, when you got one truck on a slope and the one in front is level? I see it all the time.

Mine was like that with 20K miles on it and three years old when I got it.
My friends 05 was like that with 14K on it and the 07 owner never noticed until I pointed it out.

Measure it out and see if its the same for you. The ones I have seen have almost been perfectly lined up with tow hooks of a F-150.
