dealership billing problems/actuator job
dealership billing problems/actuator job
About 2 weeks ago I had brakes done in all 4 corners, and the plugs changed in my 06 f150 at the dealership. The day after getting the brakes done, I hear a semi-quiet metal grinding/ratteling noise coming from the front end, but its enough to get my attention. I take it back the the dealership, and they tell me the sound is coming from the front 4x4 hub, and it is being caused by a the 4x4 actuator, that is trying to put the hub into 4x4 when its supposed to be in 2x4. I pick my truck up the next day with a bill of 1 hour and parts for a total of $150. As I drive home, I hear the noise again instantly. When I go back into the dealership, the tech comes out with a hand air pump, connects to something behind the front left wheel, gives it a few pumps and tells me something to do with the 4x4 vacuum system is leaking. It takes all of 2 seconds to test, and after testing the other side he says that both sides are leaking. I ask if the $150 I just spend on the actuator was because of a mis-diagnosis, and he doesnt really give me an answer. I think "oh great, what are they going to charge me for this now", and head back to the service desk. Without really giving them too much attitude, the service tech tells me that each side is around $240 in parts, plus labor, but they will do the whole thing, free of charge. I quickly agree, and schedual an appointment for next monday.
As I drive home, I am mind boggled that they didnt even try to charge me for the next appointment, and I am now wondering why they didnt.
-Did they screw something up on the original brake job, and I should try to get my $150 for the actuator back?
-Or did they put in the actuator, when they should have tested for the vacuum leak, and thats why they are doing this free of charge?
Thanks,
Jesse

When my transmission was going out I had my dealership look at it and they couldn't really find anything wrong after dropping the pan. I didn't want them to tear into the tranny at that point since it was still, more or less, working. Still cost me $200+.
When my transmission finally died I brought it back to that dealership and they credited me the amount I spent last time towards replacing my transmission.
Your dealership may have missed something last time and want to make it up to you so you'll keep coming back.
