Let me start by explaining that I've been having issues with truck bogging down at either low speed or highway speed. Have to let off gas to make it go. That's been going on for months. Also, I've had the vibration in the gas pedal off and on that some members complain about. I've replaced throttle body, maf, new plugs, new cops and new fuel filter. Drove truck all day yesterday. Pulled into the garage and everything seemed as usual. Went to leave last night and it's like my ebrake is on. Truck won't move backwards or forwards. It's like trying to accelerate while your foots on the brake. Just doesn't want to move. This is a 2004 screw lariat. I'm not much of a mechanic though I've done most of the work listed above thanks to the guys in the forum. Anybody have any ideas what this could be. Transmission, torque converter or ebrake has somehow engaged and won't release?

 

Are you sure you don't have clogged cats?

 

That was my thought when I read the title of the thread, that it sounds like the ebrake is on.
The question may seem rather foolish, but have you checked to make sure that the ebrake is indeed fully released ?

 

Does the engine itself stutter and shake? Or does it run properly?

 

Agreed. Even though the pedal may be fully released, check to see that the lever/cable at the rear wheels aren't siezed.

One sure sign of ebrake (or any kind of brake) binding is if you smell "hot metal" after driving a few miles at highway speed. (You may have to pull over at a safe place and walk by each of the wheels in order to smell it.)

I had a problem a few years ago with the cable on one side binding (the other side was OK) and the smell by that rear wheel was the tip-off.

If brake drag is really where your engine's energy is going, that energy has to go somewhere (i.e. heat). If there's no smell when you're close to any of your wheels, then it's reasonably safe to rule out brake binding as the cause.

If you can rule out the brakes, another thing to check is to have an engine compression check done by a trusted repair shop or a friend who has a compression tester.

 

I had it towed to a friends shop to have them look at. When I would put in any gear including neutral I would hear a "clank" coming from rear. I came back from running an errand the other day and could smell something in the back. I'm going to have them check the e brake for sure. Thanks for the heads up.

 

Engine runs perfect. No rough idle or miss. I'm going to bet it's this whole e brake issue.

 

Hm. If your brakes end up being OK, maybe time to have the rear differential and the u-joints in your driveshaft checked for binding or not meshing correctly. That "clank" sounds suspicious and it's not immediately clear how the ebrake binding alone would make that kind of sound. Basically anything that's rubbing or binding where it shouldn't be, is going to cause heating and consume power.

Mechanic called me an hour after tow trucked dropped it off. Parking brake was fully engaged evidentally caused by the cams locking up. Drives smooth again. Check out the attached link. Good info.

Were the e-brake shoes salvageable, or did you end up needing new ones?

 

They put new ones on. I'm not sure if they were or weren't to be honest. He called me up told me what was wrong with it and recomended new ones.

 

Yeah, safe call. I picked up a set at Autozone for $24. Granted I don't use the e-brake that often, but for the price - it's a no brainer.
