4.56s-price too high, or just me?

So ive been running 35's for awhile now, i do about 70% highway and 30% city and also am pretty easy on the pedal. Well i got a new toy last weekend (good ole ski boat) so ill be towing on the weekends of course. Plus i wanna get the acceleration and mpgs back. Anyways, called around for prices..3 local shops, the highest being $2150 and the lowest being $1800 is it me or is that high as hell? i got a buddy that can probly do it if he has time, and id just have to pay for parts and give him a couple hundred and he'd be happy. i was just curious if them r prices i should expect? Im in the tallahassee area so if anyone knows a cheap place worth driving to thats also an option. thanks

Are those prices for parts and install? If so that is right along with what it will cost me, so far i have about $900 for gears and install kits, $150 for oil, $250 for a mag hytec cover and about $850 for installation. So im at about what you were quoted or a bit more only because of the cover im ordering.

yes their for parts and install... and yea that is a good idea to go ahead and get a new diff cover while your swapping gears, the mag hytecs look good too. and allows for more oil. well if thats the quotes your getting, im sure thats normal and i just underestimated the cost

4X4's are expensive to regear. $1800 is good if everything is supplied. It was $1100 just for mine, but I have a feeling that the shop pulled a fast one on me.

Well ive seen my buddy swap gears in a chevy so i know he has the knowledge and knows what he is doing...but is this somthing u suggest being professionally done? or if you have the option of a buddy go for it?

Yes, let a pro do it. Most of the time, they offer some sort of warranty. I would only let a buddy do it if he was the owner of a pro shop.

Im with 4.6 on getting a pro to do it, i have a friend who could do it in his shop but if anything ever went wrong i wouldnt want to go back on him about him screwing up. I figure if im paying all this money for gears im going to get a reputable shop to install them.

I paid $800 to do my front and rear. But they were doing a lift and other things at the same time.

1600-1800 is the going average most places for parts and install. This should include quality gears, master install kits and the necessary labor.

It goes without saying, don't get cheap here! I payed about 1600 for what I thought was quality and 5 years later have had to replace both axles after they burnt up from a poor gear installation. All is well now, but I learned my lesson to look hard and deep into any shop doing any type of driveline work.

I actually live about 20 miles south of tallahassee, in the small city of crawfordville. but school and work is in tallahassee. but theres the oklochnee river about 15 min south of me and its pefect for jetskis, tubing and all that. thats where i used to take mine

damn. yea i dont need that happening. i guess it'll all be worth it in the end. especially having the comfort knowing a reputable shop did it rather than a buddy.
