ticking tapping growling oil burning ford

i have had my lariat(110K miles) a year now, on a trip it started making a growling/ moaning kinda noise, limped to the local ford house. engine light was on. they told me that was showing a camshaft position sensor malfunction on computer. i trailered it home.. no oil on dipstick when i got home. changed the oil to discover i had about a qt and half of the 7 it holds. ran fine after having oil. the last few weeks it has developed a "tap" on top of the "ticking" it has always done. over the last 3000 miles it has used 4 qts of 10-30... any ideas if any of this is related? would a thicker oil help, say 20-50? i got prices from 4k to 6k on remanufactued engines and 1 used engine for 1500 plus 1000 to install.. any suggestions would be appreciated..

I had to put a new (by new I mean used) engine in a 99 dodge I had after someone at an MX park dumped a bunch of sugar/sand in the gas nozzle. It ran fine afterwards. I think it ran us around 2k out the door. About 2 years later a hailstorm got it and I traded it in.. best of luck.

I didn't have any issue with a used motor, just try to get a good history on it first.
