Transmission Filter Change

How many of you have changed your transmission fluid filters? The service manual says for normal maintenance it wasn't required.

Also have any of you changed out your transmission fluid by tapping into the cooler lines?

I just took mine to the dealer for a flush, $159.00, they don't touch the filters anymore unless you tell them.

i did my trans filter at 50k. the service interval is 160k. mine was nasty at 50k. i suggest doing it. its not that hard, take the pan down, get 5 quarts of trans fluid everywhere, swap filters, put pan back up, fill with 5 quarts of merc 5. the little yellow thing floating in there, remove it and trash it, it plugs the dipstick tube.

im probably gonna do mine every 30k, since its such cheap insurance versus a new trans.

I am surprised that they drain 1.5 gal without putting anything back. Seems that it would almost run it dry, or at least to the point of too little fluid. Most times i have read about this, people put a quart out while putting a quart in.

The guy who wrote that was a Ford transmission engineer.

Interesting. I imagine he knew what to look for on that particular transmission, not sure if it would be different for ours or not.

It was written for a 4R100, but he says that the principle is the same for the 4R70/4R75, it's just the quantities that are different.
