05 are they worth it

I had a 99 f150 lariat 5.4 for the last 8 years. it had 188,000 miles on it, it was a great truck. No problems with it at all..... i recently purchased a 05 f150 xlt screw, 4x4. Are there any good that come with these trucks, all i have heard is bad. people say the motor is junk and wont much past 150,000 miles. Do you all have any good news about this year. I've had it for a week and im about ready to sell it....so far the power window broke, and sometimes it wont start when in park, I have put it in nuetral to start. its only done this about 4 times. that for the input in advance

I have had my 05 for almost two years now and it is getting ready to turn 100K miles. Nothing major yet except a P0430 code. In the past 7 days the truck has gone into fail safe mode twice and shut down while driving. I am beginning to loose faith quickly.

Have you ever cleaned the throttle body? If not, odds are, that is your problem. Mine did that at 109,000 miles, runs smooth now.

I bought my 2005 new and now have 113,000 on it. One window regulator, a front wheel bearing, one set of plugs, brake shoes, battery, and a throttle body cleaning. Other than that regular service. Couldn't ask for much better.

I am reading the technical article (here on the forum) on cleaning the TB as I type. I bought the truck used so I don't know what was done to it previously. The most I have done to the truck so far, besides oil changes, is a new battery and shifter ****. All done within the past couple weeks. Also had the recall work done on the brake booster hose a couple months ago. I need to get the cat replaced also but can't afford it right now. The code just came back yesterday after the battery change last week. I just happen to have a can of throttle body cleaner in the garage so I guess I will be tearing into that soon.
Sorry for hijacking the thread by the way.

I was driving down the street about 30 mph and the engine died. Then went to failsafe, would not start. I let it sit for about 5 minutes started it up and checked the codes. Indicated a dirty throttle body. I drove 150 miles home before cleaning it, got it clean and no more problems. Be sure to use a toothbruck to clean the butterfly hinges.

If I were you, I would change the plugs just to make sure they had been changed.

Thanks Bluejay. The plugs are definitely on the list of things to do. I have not worked that much in almost a year now so they will have to wait just in case I run into breakage problems. The truck went into fail safe mode for the second time tonight. Both times I was able to turn the key to off and restart immediately. While I guess this is good for saving the engine, I think it is a safety hazard on the road. I lost power steering and brakes. I have been lucky at this point that I have been on roads that aren't too busy and was able to safely pull off to the side. I would hate for this to happen while driving on one of the busy expressways around Chicago. BTW, I might have missed it in the Throttle body thread but are there any gaskets I should buy before taking the TB off? I will read on. Thanks again!

Yes, but you reuse it. Not your traditional gasket that I thought he was asking about.

I had the same problem with my throttle body. My truck had about 49K on it at the time. I cleaned it without removing it on the engine. I stuffed a large rag down the bore and cleaned the throttle body with a tooth brush and carborator cleaner. Once clean, I noticed a groove worn into the front of the throttle bore caused by the throttle plate (butterfly) contacting it. This happened because of where the metal shaft of the throttle plate rides on each side of the throttle body housing. The shaft wore the holes in the housing oval, which caused the throttle plate to contact the front of the throttle bore. I sanded the edges of the groove with a piece of fine sand paper so the plate would not get stuck in it again and I also lubricated the throttle plate shaft holes with white lithium grease. I carefully removed the rag and it's been running great ever since! I've put about 2,000 miles on it since then. Check to see if you have a groove. If you can feel it with your finger nail, then your throttle plate may be getting stuck too. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. It is colder than a well-drillers a$$ here today to I am going to get into this as so as I can get my truck into a friends barn. He has a nice setup with tons of tools, a hydraulic lift, and best of all, heat. Problem is he is always working on one of his cars or trucks. I think he has about a dozen all together. He is semi-retired and never in a hurry to finish anything. I have to schedule time when I need to get in there.

Are the '05 trucks worth it?" That's a good question. I purchased my truck used and in immaculate condition last April. Since then, I've put a ton of money into it - just in mechanical problems. I hope to have all of those problems taken care of now - it seems to be running good. I bought my truck with a warranty which means that the dealership has to do all the work for the next 2 years, which gets rather expensive when you figure that they always charge a diagnostic fee and $99 bucks an hour labor (my warranty doesn't cover diagnostic fees and only pays $60 of the labor).
On another note, these trucks look and ride great!!! They pull good, get good mileage (for a truck), and beat the heck out of a Toyota in durability tests. They have the largest standard cabs and the Supercabs are enormous! I'm still glad I bought mine and have decided to keep it! Check out these videos I've added to my social group at the link below:

^-- I agree. I bought mine from a dealer used about 3 years ago with 26,000 miles on it. Its a 04 FX4 supercrew and (knock on wood) so far I have had no major issues with it. Replaced the rear axle seals, new breaks and roters, and a new drivers window controle switch, $45. "I now have 96,000 on it and I am of course looking forward to the dreaded spark plug change. Overall I love my truck and am very happy with it. p.s. I do not drive it hard at all though, might be a different story if I beat it real bad.
