Rear Axle Trashed, What can be Beefed up?
As the title states I took my truck into a driveline shop because of a shutter/vibration I was having that was progressively getting worse. Come to find out my gear installation was far from being worth the 1600 I payed... Seals are in backwards, gears had no 'lash' (whatever that is), there was no master install kit, a hodge-podge of parts reused, no shims, etc, etc... Its a HUGE mess, the only salvagable part is the rear axle case
The front axle needs the gears completely redone and installed properly, but so far most of that is salvagable... so far...
That said what all can be beefed up? Keep in mind I need everything internally.. I'm going with an aftermarket locker, likely yukon and going with another set of Yukon 4.88 ring/pinion, timken bearing kits, timken seal kits... What else? I want as much of a bulletproof axle as possible while still utilizing the 9.75 case. The shop doing it is one I have good relations with and am certain I'll get a good install this time. I 'm just having a hard time finding 'beefed up' axle parts on my own..

The Yukon master install kits, Yukon ring/pinions, and a quality diff should be all you need. Are you sure you want the locker for everyday driveability? Maybe the Detroit Trutrac would be worth a look. Its a LS with no clutch packs so it wont ever wear out, and the LS is nice on the street which is where your truck spends its life, correct?

I think I'll just stick with what I told them, 'to make it beefier, cost was not an issue at the moment'..There is a lot to gather up, and I think it will be best I let them do it so I get the right stuff the first time around. I will specify the Yukon 4.88's, Yukon install kits, Yukon shim kits and possibly the truetrac (still reading up on this as we speak).
I didn't expect them to find this mess when I took it in, so it has caught me off guard. I certainly didn't expect a phone call where the first words where "who the F*^k installed these gears?!"
I'll know better tomorrow once I get there parts quote for the front and rear. it appears the front just needs reinstalled properly, the rear will be 95% brand new OEM/aftermarket stuff to rebuild it.
